letter meme

On noes, it’s the letter meme!

1. Comment on this post.
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Think of 5 fictional characters and post their names and your comments on these characters in your LJ.

(You can comment without playing—tell me if you want a letter, and I will be happy to give you one.)

_medley_ gave me “T” which stymied me for quite a bit.

1) Tony DiNozzo (NCIS)- I started watching NCIS for Michael Weatherly (I was a fan of his Dark Angel character, Logan Cale) but wasn’t quite what to think of Tony at first.  I’d liked his role in JAG (the unofficial pilot) enough, but he was a bit crude and frat boy-ish... but then I realized it was all about layers and masks.  The writing’s a bit frustratingly scattershot sometimes, but I really have fallen for the character and his hidden depths.

2) Cole Turner (Charmed) Overall I usually found the sisters on Charmed annoying self-centered bitches, but I really liked Cole.  First off, Julian McMahon is gorgeous, but the character was interesting- evil, yet there was more to him.  He was a demon who fell in love.  He tried giving up everything, he tried changing, he tried over and over to change to be a better person for the woman he loved.  Awwww.  Overall, he didn’t have a whole lot of success, but that’s not the point.

3) Thor/Thunderstrike aka Eric Masterson (Marvel comic universe) Eric was just a guy who was hurt when Thor got into a huge fight with Mongoose at his construction site.  Later he and Thor become friends and Eric is mortally wounded trying to save Thor’s life.  Thor begs for Odin to save him and Odin does by binding the two men together- sharing a body.  Eric can tap his staff to turn into Thor.  They co-exit for awhile like that, and there’s quite a bit of chaos in Eric’s life as a result, but then Thor kills Loki (or so people think) and he’s exiled and Eric has to *BE* Thor, with Thor’s powers but no real idea of how to control them.  He tries his best.  There are some spectacular failings, but several successes.  Eventually Thor is exonerated and given his powers back and Eric is given the powers of Thunderstrike instead.  And despite being a divorced Dad, despite having a business that’s falling apart, he tries to continue to save the world.

4) Captain Paul Turner (Strange World, a tv show I’m sure none of you have heard of) Paul was doctor working for USAMRIID when he comes down with aplastic anemia after being exposed to chemical weapons.  On his deathbed he’s injected with a drug, and told it’s a temporary cure for the disease.  He’ll need regular injections and will have to earn them.  He is asked to work as a Special Investigator for USAMRIID to look into abuses of science.  All in all he hates being dependent on the drug and the mysterious woman slipping him the doses, but realizes he is doing good in the world as a result, and hopes that he’s making a difference in preventing the world from being exploited by those willing to bend science to their will.

5) Tim Bayliss (Homicide: Life on the Street) I love how the show was bookended by this character.  The pilot has him as a rookie seeing the homicide department with fresh, innocent eyes- he’s so excited to be working there he’s practically vibrating.  And the last episode of S7 has him packing his desk, dejected and worn down by all the crime and violence and plagued by the cases he couldn’t solve and all the murderers who got away and walking away from the squad room.  The character was fascinating and they built depth and layers into him as the years progressed, from his partner barely putting up with him, to begging him not to die after Tim took a bullet for him.  There was a layer of sadness and despair and a damaged childhood that just made him that much more interesting.

I only know 1 and 2 -

DiNozzo - heh, I just wrote a post of all my reactions to NCIS so far, and my take on Tony is pretty much your early experience, I guess - I'm not warming to him in this role. But maybe if I give it more time. He's more likable in your fics, probably because you see things I don't.

Cole - I had a hard time with Cole overall and I felt like his storyline got resurrected too many times after it should have died, but that was true of everything in Charmed. Heh. I can see what you're saying, though, and I probably just didn't give him much of a chance because that show wasn't about the men for me at all. BUT I have vivid and fond memories of Cole doing tai chi/swordfighting stuff with Phoebe in the basement. They were both glistening and it was very pretty. *g*

I pretty much expected no one to know the last three.

Tony- Far too often he's written badly. But then there are these moments of brilliance, where a different persona slips though and we see what's behind the masks. Don't watch the show if you don't like it though. To be honest, even I haven't been the most faithful viewer at times.

Cole. *sigh* I know what scenes you mean. YUM. I never thought the show gave him that much of a chance (mostly because it labored under the assumption that strong woman=self centered bitch which is all too common on TV these days) but he was interesting enough for the most part.

Don't watch the show if you don't like it though.

Oh, there are other things I like about it. :) It also has been fitting the bill for something to watch that's sort of comforting in that I'm interested enough in the characters, but not strongly invested, so it doesn't stress me out and I don't have to pay really close attention. That's not a comment on the show, just about my level of involvement right now - I find I really need one or two of those, especially when my other shows get stressful!

it labored under the assumption that strong woman=self centered bitch

Oh boy did it. Heh. I was always glad for Piper - at least her issues usually felt genuine. And she had pretty hair. :)

I agree with 1 and 2. I especially hope for Tony they pull together some of the contradictory layers in the next season. The clash of some of hispersonality quirks not ringing true have got to be noticed by somebody who cares.
Don't know the others.
Very Happy for you to give me a letter.

BTW after reading some wonderful sporking of anothers NCIS Fic I was recommeneded by the crack_van to read your fic as bleach for my mind -worked beautifully, your fic being engaging, clever and with beautiful chracteristationc.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
it's nice to have a show like that- if you remember to watch, great, turn off the brain and watch, but if you don't that's ok too

There are so few cases were women are written as strong and powerful, yet not full of themselves. *sigh*

Piper did have nice hair.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad someone said that about my writings! :)

So canon consistency for Tony would be very nice. I'm not really expecting it, but it would be nice!

Since you're the first person to ask for a letter I give you "A"

I was expecting Tony, maybe Tosh, but you came up with some cool ones that I don't know. I've never even heard of Strange World, but it sounds interesting. This is more of your bad luck in liking shows that get cancelled, isn't it? *pets*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't even think of Tosh! *headdesk* my brain, it is broke!

Scifi channel bought Strange World so at least all the episodes made got to air ( a whopping 13 or so) but the producers knew it wasn't picked up for the second half of the season (On ABC, who only showed a handful of episodes) so they treated it more like a miniseries, so it's pretty self contained. Not that scifi channel ever shows stuff in a watchable way anymore, but if its on try to catch it.

I have *amazing* luck when it comes to picking shows that'll get canceled. I'm lucky that way.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-09-06 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Neither did the TW writers. *cough*

I'll keep an eye out for it on SciFi. I keep thinking I should watch "Eureka" but I haven't really gotten into it. I watched a few eps a while back and thought, that's clever, and cute, but it didn't really grab me.

Speaking of shows that didn't last long, do you remember "Jim Henson's Storyteller"? I liked that show.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
*snerk*

Eureka is cute. I watch it, but to some extent because my kids do. If you're home and it's on check it out. S1 was best, but it's still cute and fun. It's one of those shows that if can turn my brain off and watch- I don't get involved really, but it's engaging enough, if that makes sense

oh yes- Storyteller! A cool looking dog-like narrator, right?

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember Storyteller! Well, I don't, but I rented them on DVD when Zip (the Canadian Netflicks) recommended them. Baby Sean Bean! Muppets! Really weird fairy tales! I loved it.

I too have a penchant for shows that get canceled. It's a curse!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I too have a penchant for shows that get canceled. It's a curse!

*sigh* it's terrible, isn't it?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-09-06 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's one of those shows that if can turn my brain off and watch- I don't get involved really, but it's engaging enough, if that makes sense

Makes perfect sense!

And yeah, there was a dog. The Storyteller was human (John Hurt, I think) but he told the stories to his dog. Who talked. And was by turns skeptical and caught up in the story. Donna and I found them on DVD recently. They're pretty cool.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-09-06 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a neat show. Donna and I found them on DVD recently and had happy geeky nostalgia over them. And YES on the stuff that gets cancelled. It's just sad.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-06 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
oh that's right- I just remembered the dog talking

[identity profile] phoenix64.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard of Strange World! I only saw a couple of episodes, but I do remember it. And you get massive points for mentioning Homicide. I don't know if you're familiar with Gotham Central, but it was a DC title about the cops of Gotham, meant to tell their stories without Batman. I bought one of the collections recently and got ridiculously excited because a panel of their squad room had the board drawn in it.

You probably don't want to get me started on TV shows that got canceled. Profit, Vengeance Unlimited, Lost Souls, The Lazarus Man ...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-08 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Homicide, especially the early seasons when the cops looked like cops and not barbie girls. I'll have to keep my eye out for that.

Sigh- I loved The Lazarus Man. Every season it seems that I get sucked into at least one show that's cancelled before sweeps.
