Reaching Out

Title: Reaching Out
Pairing/Warning/Rating: vague Jack/Owen, spoilers for "KKBB", rated PG
Word Count: 243
Betas: [livejournal.com profile] unfeathered and [livejournal.com profile] rustydog
Summary: One of them was going to have to reach out if they didn't want to remain alone.
Author's Note: Written for [livejournal.com profile] karaokegal  who says there isn't enough Jack/Owen in the world, and for day eleven of [livejournal.com profile] consci_fan_mo for the prompt:  While truth is real you need never feel alone.

“Owen?” Jack called out, his voice roughened by sleep.

“Sorry, Jack. I didn’t mean to wake you, sorry.” Owen pushed off the doorway where he'd been leaning and walked into the office.

“What are you doing here?” He yawned and scrubbed his face with both hands. “You checking up on me?” In one deft motion he took his feet off the desk and sat up straight, in an attempt to look alert and awake.

“Yeah, well, pardon me for doing my job here. You looked like shite earlier.” Owen leaned up against the desk and grabbed Jack’s wrist, checking his pulse. “You know the regs, you probably wrote them; physicals are required after every sabbatical.”

“Hey, now,” Jack started to argue, “I hit the ground running, didn’t I? A murder, a fight, a treasure hunt, a fall, a save and a goodbye. Quite the jam-packed evening, if I do say so myself.”

“You don’t need to pretend, Jack.” Owen did a cursory examination: the penlight in the eyes, hands running over the head, a check of the neck where one hand lingered, thumb stroking the pulse point. “We’re your team. We can be here for you, if you’ll let us. I can be here for you.” He pulled Jack forward and their foreheads touched.

“I’m not ready,” Jack admitted, but didn’t pull away.

“I know,” Owen replied. “But you will be, one day.”

Relishing the contact, neither man moved for quite some time.
