“Tosh?” Owen called out, carefully, as he pulled out his gun. “Hold, very, very still.”
“Hmmm?” She was busy typing and didn’t even look up as he approached. “Why?”
“Don’t move, I just need you to-” but he broke off when she reached up to slip something to the creature on her shoulder. “What’s going on?”
“I’m helping Lady Sybil train this little guy to shoulder perch.”
“What?”
“It’s a swamp dragon. This is Sir Heffinville Snaptooth Endenrich VII, otherwise known as Charlie.” She scratched him under the chin a few times which Charlie seemed to like. His stubby little wings flapped in tandem with her scratches and he made a sort of odd rumbling noise. “Isn’t he just the cutest thing?”
“Um, right. Cute. I’m sorry, who is Lady Sybil?”
She made a dismissive gesture with her hand. “Oh, some friend of Jack’s from before his Torchwood days. She’s a little busy, new baby and all, but we couldn’t let Charlie here fall behind on his training now could we?” She swept the dragon off her shoulder to cuddle him in her arms. “Sybil hopes to get him adopted to a good home before he’s a cobb.”
“A what?” Owen couldn’t quite keep the horrified look off his face as Tosh giggled, giggled, as she gave Charlie a tummy rub.
“A cobb. People don’t tend to want older dragons, more of a likelihood to spontaneously combust and all that.”
“Err, right.” Owen inched his way to the door. “Well, I’ll just leave you to it then.”
Tosh grabbed one of Charlie’s front paws and waved to Owen with it. “Goodbye!”
“Yeah, right. Bye.” Owen made a break for it and raced out the door. “Jack?” he called out. “Hey, Jack! What’s this about dragons?”
