Driving up to the marina, Gibbs could just make out Tony fighting with Sgt. Ellison and Cpl. Jackson on the docks. It might have been two against one, but Tony, being Tony, had things well in hand. The car screeching to a halt, Gibbs looked down long enough to throw it into park while opening the door and it was just at that moment that Ellison’s 40 foot On Leave blew to kingdom come.

Gibbs was halfway down the docks before he realized that not only was the boat gone, now nothing more than a fiery mess of a thousand pieces, but the dock where Tony and the others had been destroyed as well.

Gibbs ran past the harbor master, who was on the phone with the police, ignoring the shout of, “Hey! You can’t go down there!”

“DiNozzo!” Gibbs shouted. He stopped as close as he could get; standing on the main pier, a good thirty feet from the explosion, he covered his eyes against the glare and the heat and looked out, trying to spot DiNozzo, Ellison or Jackson, or something other than burning wood and charred bits of boat bobbing in the marina. “Damn it, Tony,” he muttered, pulling out his cell phone, “Abby’s going to kill me.”

“What... for?”

Gibbs didn’t quite jump at the question, but it was close. He spun around and spotted Tony in the water, dragging Ellison towards the pier. “DiNozzo?”

“You... gonna help... or just... stand there?” Tony asked, in between strokes.

Gibbs shoved the phone back in his pocket. “We got survivors in the water,” Gibbs shouted over his shoulder to the various emergency personnel arriving at the scene. “Get some medics down here!” Laying down and leaning over the edge he grabbed Ellison from Tony, hefting him onto his shoulders and then shifting back and laying him flat on the pier.

“There a pulse?” Tony called from the water.

“Seems like.” Surrendering Ellison’s care to the arriving EMTs and police, Gibbs reached down to help Tony out. “Jackson?”

Sitting on the edge, head in his hands, Tony was taking huge gulps of air. “No idea. Sorry, Boss.”

Eying Tony critically, Gibbs checked for injuries. “Divers will find him, eventually.” Reaching out, he grabbed Tony’s chin and lifted it so their eyes met. “I’m taking you to the hospital to get checked out.”

“No need, Boss.”

“You got blown up, DiNozzo.”

“Gibbs...”

“You won’t need to stay unless Ducky insists, but you are going.” Gibbs closed his eyes, and leaned forward until their foreheads touched. “The whole... the docks are gone, Tony, just gone.”

Tony sighed dramatically, and let Gibbs help him up, but winced when he looked at his feet. “Another pair of Gucci shoes, ruined,” he muttered.

Gibbs slung Tony’s arm over his shoulder. “Better the shoes than you, DiNozzo.”

“There is that,” Tony managed to say through clenched teeth as they made their way to the car.

After a few minutes Gibbs added, “and breaking in another agent is too much work.”

“Love you too, Boss.”
