Benton had not expected a phone call this late in the day. He had answered on the second ring, but heard nothing but an overpowering rendition of "Recondita armonia" for a few moments before the opera was muffled with a melodic, “one minute please,” and Benton recognized the caller.

“Dr. Gustafson?”

“Constable Fraser, I have found myself in need of your assistance.”

“Is everything all right?” Benton had always found the coroner such an unflappable man, a request for help was quite unusual.

“Oh yes, quite. But you see,” Dr. Gustafson began before the phone was jostled. Benton heard, but couldn’t quite understand a brief exchange of words that followed before he continued, “Let me put you on speaker phone, perhaps my guest could explain things better.”

“Oh dear.” Benton sighed. There was only one person capable of creating this sort of kerfuffle in a morgue. Jack?”

“Hey, Ben.” The sheepishness in Jack Harkness’ voice could be heard, even through the tinny connection. “How’d you guess?”

“Dr. Gustafson? I’d like you to meet a dear old friend, Captain Jack Harkness.” Benton ran a hand through his hair and took a deep breath. There were times... “He may appear to be a bit unorthodox, but he is a very good man. Jack? Dr. Gustafson has worked for the Chicago police department for some time, I don’t think there should be any need to-”

“Ben, whatever you’re thinking, stop it.” Jack laughed that deep laugh of his. “You worry too much! Mort here just wanted to check out my story before tonight’s performance at the Lyric. He has tickets!” Back from the dead all of, probably, ten minutes and already with a date to see the sold out performance of Puccini’s Tosca that evening.

“And such an interesting story it is!” Dr. Gustafson added before breaking into song again.

“Jack, please.” Perhaps if he could just had a minute to explain things he could-

“Gotta go, Ben,” Jack shouted over the cacophony, “If I can I’ll stop by afterwards, but don’t wait up!”

“Jack,” Ben tried again, but heard nothing but the dial tone. Oh dear.
