“Poker,” Rose said, her eyebrows impossibly high and her tone impossibly incredulous.

“Yeah.” The Doctor gave a little nod and grinned.

“We’re in the Rybar Nebula and you want to play poker.”

“Yeah.” The Doctor rubbed his hands together with delight. “Look,” he said as they paused in the doorway.

Rose peered in. “All I can see is smoke.”

“I know,” Jack said, sneaking up behind them and delivering a smack to Rose’s rear as he did, “don’t you just love it?”

“But, what about the purple beaches? The ruby waterfalls? I thought I might work on my tan.”

Jack just looked at her. “I’m a little more interested in the game room myself myself. Wine, women and song. Or beer, boys and betting. Or vodka, Volarkians and Venusian poker. I’m not picky. But you two should go off and have some fun. Don’t wait up.” He gave her a quick peck on the cheek before slipping past her and into the smoky haze.

Rose looked at the Doctor expectantly, but he shrugged and said, “I have to stay. Can you imagine what kind of trouble Jack could get into here?”

Rose laughed. “Good point. I have my mobile, give me a call when it’s time to head back.”

After she left, the Doctor headed off to find Jack. Perhaps, he hadn’t put as much thought into this trip as he should have. He’s figured a hand or two of poker, a little fun at the beach, just a chance for them all to relax. He hadn’t counted on the unholy gleam in Jack’s eyes when he’d seen where they’d landed.

Eventually, he’d tracked Jack down at one of the poker tables. “Jack?” There were an awful lot of chits on the table in front of him.

“Doctor! Grab a hand!”

“So you play Venusian poker now, do you?”

Jack grinned that grin of his that always made the Doctor nervous. Very nervous. “Oh, I’ve played for ages.” Looking around for a second, Jack motioned over one of the serving robots. “Two hypervodkas, please,” he ordered, dropping one of his chits in the payment slot.

“Jack, are you sure you know what you’re doing? That chit was a-”

“You worry too much!” Jack thumped the Doctor on the back. Hard. “Trust me, I know what I’m doing.”

“Jack...”

“Hey, did I ever tell you about the last time I was here? It’s a great story- filled with suspense and bravery, although, I have to admit the five hypervodkas for breakfast might have been a bit over the top, even for me, but there was a happy ending! Hang on a sec,” Jack peeked at his cards again, frowned at the constellation card on the table and folded the hand. “Anyway, as I was saying....”
