(no subject)

I watch a few story finder communities. I don't always find the requests to be a story I'd be interested in, and in fact some wind up hitting some of my serious squicks, but I appreciate the fact that the comms exist and try to help people find stories when I can.

The following post appeared briefly on the ncis one:

I honestly don't know what is wrong with some of these requests... What is wrong with some of you...Always looking for stories that have awful, horrible, stuff happening to Tony??

What happened to normality?? An actual plot, storyline, depth?? Not the same old, same old rec's and some that should'nt be rec'd...

Sincerely,

{poster whom I shall not name}

My response was:

It is a wide and wonderful world out there filled with diverse people with different likes and dislikes. Some people want to read slash, others only gen. People like what they like, be it mpreg or D/s or whump or case!fic or slash or gen or het or what have you. This is a comm to help people find those stories. If you don't like the request, scroll past it. If you don't approve of the story suggested, don't read it. There is no need to judge the requests or make your own decision on their worth.

The entire thread has been deleted, but I stand by my statement. Opinions are good. Intolerance and censorship are not. Let's try to have an open mind and let people read what they want to, okay?

Good for you!

Thanks!

I'll admit being a little surprised with the [livejournal.com profile] ncisficfind comm of late because of a poster going about and commenting on recced fics (not even in threads they started, just randomly) arguing over the validity of the rec.

HUH? Good grief? Granted, I've seen stories recced that I couldn't read because they were poorly written, but they were *valid* because they were about what was requested. Or were they confusing "valid" with "good"?

The one I saw (left on my comment mentioning ksl's stuff to someone who asked for people to suggest their favorite G/T 1st time or preslash) complained about the quality and lack of anything happening in the story and wondered why people suggest such stuff.

I think that the requests on finder communities are often depressing, but that's no reason to rant at people.

Oh! That one! Yeah, I saw that. Yeah, KSL writes romance. The only romance *I* can tolerate (and actually enjoy) is in fic. I have the same "but nothing ever *happens*" complaint about romance novels (which is why I don't attempt them any more ;-). My other complaint has to do with protagonists who are too stupid to live, but that's another issue. ;-);-)

I happen to *love* KSL's romances. :-)

The commenter should have left it at the "nothing ever happens" complaint and kept their foot out of their mouth.

Exactly. Some are story subjects I find disturbing even disgusting (looking at some of the RPS request at the supernatural comm there) but if someone wants to read them, and someone else can help them find it, why should it affect me?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
there's massive chacacter development though. but, yeah... if it's not your cup of tea just move on to a different suggestion.

[identity profile] taffimai.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
See for me it's more: "Oh. Wow. You want woobie!Ianto fic. How surprising. What is the desired trauma this time? Anorexia? Oh, goodie."

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
exactly! I only ever rant when a story is poorly written. *shudder* RPS *shudder

One of the recent recs for Tony Trauma (I don't remember if it was sick or injured or what) also included domestic discipline, which is a MAJOR squick for me. Oddly enough, it wasn't that hard to just close that tab and move on.

Sometimes I am left in horrified awe by the specific requests and resulting fics I see on tw_storyfinder... But clearly somebody wants it again, and I can manage to scroll on to the ones that sound pretty good and it all evens out in the end...

So I quite agree with you, basically. (:

[identity profile] taffimai.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Have you actually found good stuff on tw_storyfinder? I've never seen anything there that was good that I hadn't discovered on my own.

[identity profile] laligin.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I sort of stopped reading fanfic for a good while, because I had less time on my hands and it became very difficult to wade through and find what I liked, so I think there've been a couple of ones from that period that have turned up there. I couldn't tell you anything specific, but there have definitely been a few good ones. Just enough to keep me watching. (:

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, it can be a little tiring to read how often someone wants specific whumps

[identity profile] taffimai.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Well, to be totally honest it's more annoying that they're all Ianto!whumps and Jack is ignored in the whumping.

Also? I love Ianto, but he doesn't remotely look anorexic in season two.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I didn't understand- You are under no obligation to read the request or the rec. Don't like? Move on

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes, I must admit, it boggles the mind that not only did someone *write* it, but someone *read* it and wanted to read it again and someone else could find it for them.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I've found the occassional humor/crack piece. I stay far away from 90% of it though.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
horrified awe just about sums it up *nods*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really understand fanfic's obsession with anorexia. It's in a LOT of fandoms. *sighs*

[identity profile] kitsun3.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have a response of "O.o? ...D=" to some of the stuff requested on spn storyfinders, but it's really not that hard to just scrooooll on down, is it?

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Blood/knife/gun play is extremely gruesome too. I thought one defense of fanfic was that it was about a character not an actor.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly, some of the spn storyfinder things really make my head spin, but I shrug and scroll past it. Nice to know others are reasonable like that too.
