Author's Note: Written for [personal profile] rustydog, who wanted wanted a Due South/Torchwood crossover from Diefenbaker's point of view.  See here for other Due South/Torchwood crossovers.

It was nearly quitting time before they told Benton about the envelopes that needed to be stuffed before the morning mail.  Not that he complained about staying late.  He would never complain.  He’d merely called Ray and cancelled their plans and then began folding, stuffing, sealing and stamping.  I  helped.  Well, as much as a wolf was able to.

It was dark before everything was finally done and we could leave the embassy. Benton paused on the steps, smelling the air.  I sniffed it too; there was a crispness to it, it almost smelled like winter, but not quite.  Benton looked down at me, “It’s hard to believe it’s December, isn’t it, Dief?”  I saw him sigh.  “It seems wrong that we can be practically approaching Christmas without the first snow of season having happened yet.”  I leaned against him for a second, trying to tell him it’s okay; this was Chicago, not home, and that’s the way things were here, but I’m not sure he even tried to understand.

I picked up a familiar smell and took off down the sidewalk, holding my tail high.  I knew Benton would follow me, walking quickly to try to catch up.  I had to track down that smell!  There was a sudden swirl in the shadows and then the path was blocked by a dark figure.

I looked up and saw Benton say, “Pardon me, sir,” as he stepped to the side to let the shadowy figure pass.

I barked happily, having found what I was looking for.  “Now Constable, is that anyway to greet an old friend?”  The shadow said, laughing.  But it wasn’t a shadow, it was Jack!   I found Jack!!!

Even Benton smiled when he recognized the other man.   He let himself be engulfed in a hearty hug and pummeled his friend’s back in return while I pranced around the two men.

“It’s good to see you too, Dief.”  Jack said, releasing Benton and bending down on one knee to bury his face in my fur.   Then he took my face in his hands and looked me straight in the eye.  “Have you been taking care of Ben for me like you promised?”  I huffed, a bit annoyed he’d even think he had to ask.   But then he scratched me in that spot behind the ear so I forgave him.  I couldn’t miss the concerned expression on his face as he studied Benton, he probably thought my pack mate looked as tired and stressed as I did.  “Ben?”  Jack seemed a little worried, and pretty tired himself.

“I’m fine, Jack.  It’s fine.  However, it has been one of those days.”  Benton managed a small smile for his friend as he bent down to scratch me behind the other ear.  A wolf could get used to this.  “Are you in town long?”

Jack sighed, one of those big sighs that starts in the toes and ends in sagging shoulders.  “No.  I’m not even supposed to be here, but then something came up and they decided I was the best one to handle it, and, well, you know how that goes.”

Benton nodded, and said, half to himself, “Responsibilities.”  I leaned up against him as a sign of support.  He may have his responsibilities, but he is mine after all.

Jack cocked an eyebrow; I wish I knew how he did that.  “Yes.  I guess we’re both overly familiar with those.”  But then he smiled, a warm and open smile.  “But it meant I got to see you two again.”  And he gave me another ear scratch.  “Twice in the last...”  I saw a crease brush across Jack’s forehead and the smile turned sheepish as he drifted off.  I wasn’t sure what he was embarrassed about, I didn’t know how long it had been either.

“Twice in a very short time,” Benton supplied quickly, “a short time for you, anyway.”

“Right.”  Jack said, standing up.  I stood up too.  “Well, boys,” Jack asked, “Have time to grab some coffee?”

“For you, Jack?  Always.”  I barked in agreement as well.

We wound up at the diner Benton had been frequenting of late.  The owner never tried to shoo me out by pointing to ‘no dogs allowed’ sign like other people in this town did.  How people couldn’t see the difference between wolves and dogs was something I never quite understood.  No one here ever cared if Benton nursed a cup of coffee for hours while reading one of his dad’s journals, and sometimes the waitresses brought me leftover bacon or sausages.  To say I liked the place was putting it mildly.

I sat there next to them for a bit, watching them catch up.  Jack kept the banter light, going on and on about the trials and tribulations of Torchwood’s pet pterodactyl, whatever that was, but he carefully deflected any specific questions about his recent activities or well-being.  Benton, meanwhile, spoke at great depth about a recent case he’d helped Detectives Huey and Gardino solve and they’d both laughed at his description of how Lieutenant Welsh attempted, but hadn’t quite succeeded, to hide a smile when the damsel in distress had kissed each one of them in appreciation.  I noticed that Benton did not mention how things at his actual job in the consulate were going, and Jack didn’t ask.

Eventually I lay down under the table directly between the two men, sprawling over their feet.  I could feel the shift in vibrations when the pitch of their voices changed as they relaxed, the tension draining out of them was so obvious I could almost see it.  My tail was wagging so fast I was probably going to wear the finish off the floor.  It had been so long since Benton relaxed like this, since he let himself enjoy this new home.  Jack always did wonders for him.  They were so happy together.

Right before I feel asleep I wondered if I was going to be acting as a doorstop again tonight...

Awww! Dief POV is love!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
*g* glad you liked it!

[identity profile] shadowbyrd.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What taffimai said.

It wins! God, it makes me love Def even more (if possible).

Lots of favourite lines, but this one has to be the best; But it wasn’t a shadow, it was Jack! I found Jack!!!

(also the prancing!)

Aw, I feel all snuggly and warm now. And impatient for Christmas, for some reason...

Anyway - thank you!

You already know that I think this is all kinds of adorable, but I'll say it again. :)

I love Dief's protectiveness and his fondness for Jack, and his happiness at the end as his humans relax.

“Have you been taking care of Ben for me like you promised?” I huffed, a bit annoyed he’d even think he had to ask. But then he scratched me in that spot behind the ear so I forgave him.

Love that to pieces.

Oh my goodness, so much love for this! I am smiling many smiles.

I'm often hesitant when it comes to first-person, but you've completely won me over with Dief. Great attention to canine mannerisms, again, and details of how an animal would percieve things, like Dief using the shift in voice pitch and moderation to judge tension.

And canines, if they wrote, would *totally* use triple exclamation points sometimes. :)

I love the leaning and prancing and "pack mate," and on the human side, the fact that both Jack and Fraser are avoiding things.

Yay!

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! and the title, hee!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
aww, snuggly and warm is a great reaction! Glad you liked it! :)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
awww, thanks! And thanks for the beta and encouragement!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
*phew* I was nervous it was too cheesy!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
And canines, if they wrote, would *totally* use triple exclamation points sometimes.

*eg* wouldn't they just? I'm so glad you liked it! Thanks for the prompt!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-11-15 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
You are more than welcome!

[identity profile] hellenebright.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Dief is love. And your canine perspective is just right. Dief would be utterly unworried by the concept of time. Canids measure time with their stomachs, so the whole measure of their time goes from one full stomach to the next.

But what will happen if RayK tries opening the door on Dief? Will he let him in to join the festivities?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad you liked it! I could never write that scene, but by all means, go ahead and write it yourself!

Wow! Wasn't expecting wolf-POV! Beautifully done. :-)

Jack sighed, one of those big sighs that starts in the toes and ends in sagging shoulders.

Very insightful description there - I could really see that sigh.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww thanks! Glad the POV worked for you! (it was fulfilling a request to write it that way. Sometimes I think I'm doomed to only write Jack/Fraser via an outsiders POV)

and *eg* that you liked the sigh. I'm pretty proud of that description myself!

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be wagging my tail if I had one, this is lovely. And very wolfish. I adore the bit about stuffing envelopes, it made me giggle (having some very odd looks of my 2 dogs when dealing with envelopes I can just imagine it).

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you liked it so much! :)

[identity profile] szm.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw that's lovely. Due South was the first show I ever got all obbsessive about (and I may have had a tiny crush on Ray Kowalski...)

Plus Deif! Everyone loves Deif.

[identity profile] nos4a2no9.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Very cute! Loved the Dief-voice, and wow, Cap'n Jack and Fraser would be so very, very pretty together, wouldn't they? *drools*

[identity profile] snufflesdbear.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
How cute! Of course, I instantly rec'd it to the Diefenbaker list. Hope you don't mind. It's only like 19people.

Also added you to my frineds list. So I don't miss any stories, and can find you when I have time (*HA!) when done moving. Then, I hope to read lots of stories.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Jack and Fraser together are VERY pretty!! Glad you liked!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
isn't dief great? Glad you liked it!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't know there was a Diefenbaker list. Thanks for reccing it there, and I'm glad you liked it!

I love Dief POV stories! This story is even that much better being Fraser/Jack. \o/

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Glad you liked it! :D

[identity profile] eumenidis.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, Dief works so hard taking care of his human packmate...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Makes you want to just give Dief a big ol' scratch behind the ear, doesn't it?

[identity profile] eumenidis.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Dief doesn't have to do anything to make me want to give 'im a scratch behind the ear. He's just so...cute. (Eat your heart out, White Fang.)

[identity profile] issuesgrrrl.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
::snurffle!:: DS/ T-wood X-over Jack/ Ben wolf!fic! Boo-yah!
Me ::hearts:: you!

(now if we could just shoe-horn that Kowalski guy into the action before the porn starts, well, then I could die a happy fangirl that's what!)

This series is great!!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad you like these, I'm enjoying writing Benton and Jack in scenes together, and Dief is an added bonus!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks very much!

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2007-11-17 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
But it wasn’t a shadow, it was Jack! I found Jack!!!

Too cute! This is how I imagine dogs (ok, half-wolves) would talk, if they could--with lots of exclamation points and a fair amount of bragging. :D

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-17 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
awww, glad you liked! See what you started with your Fraser/Jack love?

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2007-11-17 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
I WON'T APOLOGIZE.

And hey, in between you and [livejournal.com profile] hellenebright, do I even need to finish my fic? *sits back and lets y'all do all the work*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-17 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
You always said you can never have enough DS/TW fics... so YEAH you need to finish yours!!!

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2007-11-17 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Slave driver. *grumbles*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-17 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] _medley_'s been teaching me how to be evil. And, hey, I wrote you SIX DS/TW fics!!!

[identity profile] laurab1.livejournal.com 2007-11-18 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Awww! I love this :)

DIEF, \o/

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Dief is just looking out for Ben, you know that! :)

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2010-05-01 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Very sweet. I'm enjoying these stories tremendously. It's weird to enjoy a dynamic between Jack and someone like Benton who relationship to his sexuality is different, but somehow equally natural, whether you're implying that kind of relationship or not. And of course, DIEF LOVE!!!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2010-05-01 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad you're enjoying these, it's been fun to revisit them too. In my mind Benton is almost asexual in canon, just out of his element where anyone if involved on that front- so very different from Jack's omnisexual flirty nature, yet I could always seem them as a couple in a crossover. (Weird, I know)

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2010-05-01 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
It works for me too. I think Benton can be sexual in canon--he didn't seem to have any problem flaunting it with Victoria and I absolutely love him in the "drag" episode, especially where he's so dry wittily snarking Ray at the end.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2010-05-01 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
That's true. There are several other bits though- like in "They eat horses, Don't they?" where he's so flustered by women and doesn't really seem to know what to do. I love the line where the mother he was helping says to the horse-loving woman- something to the effect of- I want to hug him but I'm afraid of wrinkling him.
