Criminal Minds grumble:

"Commack, Long Island." NO ONE FROM LI WOULD SAY THAT!!!!

Long Island court? NO.. it would be Suffolk Country or Nassau County.

Mr. Cop says "Bad guy has NO way of getting off Long Island"

Ummm, what? The ferry, all the bridges, the thousands of personal boats?!?!?!

And now Rossi's stolen a personal effect of a dead guy. WHAT?!?

Wouldn't it be Commack, NY? People don't do research anymore!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone from Long Island would definitely say Commack, NY.

I've seen people from outside the tristate area specify Long Island.. but more like Commack, NY. On Long Island. Or something like that. LI isn't a state. Especially if you lived there you would NEVER, ever say a city like that.

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
No one who lives there would say New York City. It's just "The City."

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. Although the city usually means Manhattan only.

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
yes of course! Did you know that NY has so many people that it has different speech patterns from one end to another?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Upstate is totally different than the rest of NY. The parts of the city differ from each other. There are some generalities for NY in itself though

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I remember that when I took speech in college that there was a special pronunciation found on LI. An extra g I believe.

The south pronounces its vowels completely differently than in NY. The first year I lived in Alabama I had to learn to speak differently so that I was at least halfway understandable, in addition to speaking slower.

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Do you now, or have you ever, lived in NY? I'm an expatriate Brooklyner myself.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
LonG Island. Yep. I bet you had to learn to speak slower too!

Where in NY are you from?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm from Long Island- Lake Grove to be extact

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Kings County otherwise known as Brooklyn. In other parts of the country you can have a few towns in a county; in NY you have several counties in one city.

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
where is Lake Grove? I have/had family in the 5 towns.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I was there many times. I had lots of relatives that lived in Queens, Brooklyn (park slope) and Manhattan.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Near Smithtown, Lake Ronkonkoma... exit 60 off the LIE. Near Smithhaven Mall. Suffolk County

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Ahhhh. A ways out. I don't know Suffolk at all. I know Nassau.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Well, LI goes quite a bit further out though

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
All the way out to Montauk. The Long Island is split into 4 counties: Kings, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. And most people don't realize NYC is partially on it

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
What about all the airports? There's one in Islip, and two in Queens: LGA & JFK. LGA and JFK are international airports. You can go anywhere from them.

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
half of Long Island is part of NYC. Richmond is its own island. The Bronx is the only part of NYC that is on the mainland. I sometimes call NYC a collection of off-shore islands.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Islip-MacArthur is smallish, and easy to have the cops keep an eye on, but still...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Which is one of the reasons travelling in and around NYC is so hard. SO MANY BRIDGES

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
there's JFK/LGA and Newark not far away.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Ah true. and they are in Queens. And there's the train too. The good old LIRR

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-10-10 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think what they were trying to convey with the cop was that they had all the ways off the island covered, but they sort of failed miserably with that.

And now Rossi's stolen a personal effect of a dead guy. WHAT?!?

I was a bit confused by that, too.

I really don't like Rossi this season. I feel like they were trying a bit too hard to make this a Rossi episode and totally failed at doing anything that developed him as a character.

Also, where the hell did bitchy!Hotch go?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-10 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Overall, this episode sucked. The stupidity of the writers kept getting in my way of enjoying it. *sigh*

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-10-11 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was just sort of all over the place.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-11 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
With plotholes you could drive trucks through.

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-10-11 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Which is sad, because I thought the season did actually start out pretty well.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-11 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I still want to know about random swirly sand of saving.
