Oh Captain, My Captain

Title:  Oh Captain, My Captain
Pairing/Warning/Rating: none, rated G
Word Count: 100
Summary:  The Doctor ponders Jack as they part at the end of "LOTTL"
Author's Note: written for the Userpic Drabble Challenge, snitched from [personal profile] unfeathered

The Doctor looked at Jack’s haphazard salute and smiled.  It was such a Jack thing to do, especially with the wink that followed to Martha.  Chivalrous flirting was something only Jack could get away with.  Most probably wouldn’t even try.

Then Jack turned and walked away, back to that team of his.  The team he led.  Yes, his old friend was a leader now.  He might have assumed the rank of captain along with the name Jack Harkness for a con, but it was a position he grew into.

And the Doctor was inordinately proud of his Captain for that.

Awww, that's so cute! Warm and fuzzy Doctor appreciating Jack fic!

Love the phrase 'chivalrous flirting' too. That just about sums Jack up! :-)

It's nice to see the character of Jack Harkness grow. That's what Jack is: A flirt.

It was such a Jack thing to do, especially with the wink that followed to Martha.

So true!

I think now I won't be thinking so much of Riddled With Bullets!Suzie when I read the text on your icon. *g*

Awh! I love the final line. And all of it, but the final line is the bit that does it for me.

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Chivalrous flirting was something only Jack could get away with
I love this line so much that and the closer with its his Captain
We don't hear that often enough from the Doctors

*blushes* Thanks! I'm trying to like Ten.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
glad you liked it!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
oooh, that's a bad connotation to have!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Thanks :)

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Argh, I'm trying to write a userpic drabble, but I can't get it below 113 words. This is hard!

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's okay. And I'm going to think of Jack and the Doctor now, anyway. :)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
*phew*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Drabbles are futsy that way, mine either want to be 70something words or 118 or so

You seem to be doing OK! :-)

You don't like him? I'd forgotten that. Does that have anything to do with the trouble you're having with the Old Man series.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! And we don't, the Doctor needs to be more aware of what Jack is to him!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Jack's S3 episodes made me really dislike Ten, he was so dismissive (to the point of being cruel) to Jack.

The Old Man series is dying because I'm at a loss of where to go next. I should have stopped with just part one. that part worked.

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah it's way past time he got in touch with his inner Time Lord!

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm good with the blue biro of death if you'd like??

Is totally not avoiding writing myself...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
avoiding writing? whatever do you mean?

[identity profile] phoenix64.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww, this was great!

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, dang, five minutes ago I would totally have taken you up on that! I think I've got it now, though, and I've just got to walk out the door.

Thank you!

Yeah, I get that. Though they do seem (to me, anyway) like they've reached an understanding by the end of LotTL - this scene you're describing here.

And I understand about the series. I'm glad you did carry on, because what you've done is really good, but you do get to a point where you actually have to decide where you're going with it and, yeah, that's hard.

Oh well. Maybe something in the new series will spark an idea for you or something.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
new canon will be a good thing. I hope I can pick up the series at some point, but whenever I try now I feel like I'm writing it for others, not for me. If that makes any sense

Oh, it does. It makes a lot of sense.

Don't sweat it. It doesn't matter one way or another, in the long run. :-)

I'm kind of at the same point with MP again. Though I'm hoping role-playing the Master will spark off a few ideas!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2007-12-19 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea what I'd write about mine, but I think you've nailed yours brilliantly. My fave bits?
'Chivalrous flirting' and the last line.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-19 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yours is a bit more difficult than mine! Glad you liked 'chivalrous flirting' I'm pretty proud of that myself!

[identity profile] laurab1.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Chivalrous flirting

Love that bit :)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
thank you! *g*
