A sign that all is relative

When walking the dog today I kept thinking how WARM it was. Seriously warm. Of late I'd been wearing a sweatshirt jacket, heavy winter jacket, serious gloves and, more often than not, long thick scarf and hat as well. Today? A light jacket and gloves. That's it. And I was hot. Out of curiosity I just looked online at the weather channel and found out that with wind it feels like 30°F (-1°C).

No wonder.

Now why, you ask, does that seem so warm? So far this winter we've had SIX days with lows at or below -40° with windchill. Now, I've always liked the idea of -40° because you don't need to specify F or C, but in practice? Not fun. The coldest was -55°F and there was a two week period where the highs did not get above 0°F. Officially speaking wise, the last winter that came close to this kind of cold was 20 years ago (that year the Governor canceled school statewide due to extreme cold for one day. This year there have been four or five similar cancellations.)

Snow-wise, the amount that's fallen has only been a little more than average, but because of the cold temps it hasn't melted. Usually there'll be a bunch of days in the teens or 20s and the occasional 30s and when you add in the sun the snow has a chance to melt a little and compact so the roads don't have a continual snow/ice covering and the sidewalks clear a little and the berms between the sidewalks and the streets come down a little. None of that has had a chance of happening this year so you have horrid roads and sidewalks and so much snow shoveled up from the sidewalks and plowed up from the road that people driving past can't even see that I'm walking a dog.

Blargh. But maybe with an end in sight? (For the cold anyway, I still have shoveling to do after yesterday's snow. *sigh*)

We haven't had the severe temperatures as you (-30 C is about as bad as it's gotten, and only in the middle of the night), but snow has been something else here as well. The snowbanks are so high, you can't see pulling out of the driveway if anyone's coming. And we had more today. It's ridiculous.

I've found the bobbing of the temperatures really hard on my head, too. We've from -28 to about 4 in a day, and the changes in the barometric pressure are aggravating my migraines. And Mum's knee.

At least the sun is sticking around for longer? That's good for the people with SAD in my house. It's been a wild winter, though. We haven't had one this weird in a while.

Trying to get out of the alleys here is the same, you start to inch forward and just hope no one is coming.

More sun is SUCH a good thing. It was bright and sunny for our afternoon walk and just so lovely!

We haven't quite got to lovely yet, but the fact that it's still perfectly bright out at 4:30 for my walk makes me very happy. I do enjoy walking as the sun is setting, it's very peaceful, but longer days just make me feel more productive, like I'm not behind on everything I should be doing.

Yikes! Glad it's getting a bit warmer for you.

Holy crap that's a hell of a winter. It was absurdly warm here today--almost 60F!--and that was a nice change.

Thanks! It was so lovely out, even with all the snow shoveling :)

ooh almost 60 sounds nice. But 50s now probably means very hot weather in the summer and I am not a fan of that.

holy shitballs that is cold. i'm amused in a vaguely horrified way that 30º was warm in comparison.

Normally I like MN. This winter? Not so much.

Dang, that is some SERIOUSLY cold weather. Our coldest was in the teens, but it lasted long enough and I was outdoors in it a lot, that when it got back up to the 30s, before I knew the temp I was pulling off my hat and layers and just going in a jacket. It was weird! Normally I'd be bundling up for 30s.

I do hope the end of the winter is in sight for you!

Unfortunately around 10am today what has been dubbed "the snowpocalypse" started and it's still coming down. Not sure the total accumulation, and schools haven't been canceled for tomorrow, but it looks NASTY out there.

Wow! I've never been around that kind of cold before. It's so weird (but not given the recent temps) that 30 degrees would feel warm.
