There was no one to greet him when Jack strolled into the Hub. He’d expected his return to be filled with fanfare and fun. He’d dreamed of this reunion often, and when he had he’d envisioned being met with hugs and happiness, not echoes and emptiness.

This wasn’t how it was supposed to be.

He sank onto the couch, his head in his hands, disillusioned and despondent. Eventually he became aware of a flapping sound and looked up in time to see the pterodactyl land in front of him. Jack watched as she sniffed the air, taking in his scent. There was a tilt to her head, as if she was trying to figure out who he was and if he was a threat.

Had he been gone so long she no longer remembered him? Had he changed so much?

Suddenly, she threw back her head and shrieked loudly; startling him to the point he nearly drew his gun in case she attacked. She stalked forward, coming close enough for him to feel her breath against his cheek, dipped her head and warbled quietly. Hesitantly, he reached out and stroked her. After a few minutes she shuffled away. She paused, looking back at him over her shoulder, snorted once, and then took off for her perch.

Jack leaned back on the couch, a slight smile on his face. He’d just been welcomed home by a pterodactyl; life couldn’t get any better than that.
