Feeling very stupid here....

So I was perusing the big bang website (and have I mentioned how awesome it is yet?) and saw a section of fandom labeled "New Adventures (Virgin)" and another labeled "Chalet School" and I had no idea what either are.  Wiki explained that Chalet School was apparently a series of books , I assume there is no other Doctor Who connection to them?  And, also relying on wiki, I saw that New Adventures is a series of Doctor Who books, but I was wondering if I need to be familiar with either series of books to understand the bigbang stories written within their universe.  Anyone know?

The New Adventures basically took the 'Cartmel Master Plan' that obviously never made Doctor Who (as it was scrapped) and worked it into a series of books that now are of a dubious canonical nature (the whole idea of Time Lords being 'loomed' I think comes from the New Adventures novels. You can download the last one, Lungbarrow, off the BBC website. I haven't finished reading it yet as I keep getting distracted by fanfic). Certain of the characters that you might meet in a NA fic would have a back story of which you might not be aware, such as Benny, or have gone off in a direction that doesn't quite sit right with subsequent Big Finish stuff (such as Ace the dalek hunter).

If you've wiki'd both, I think that should probably be enough. I only ever read about 8 of the NA novels and there are a *lot* more than that. I read a bunch of the Chalet School novels as a kid, but haven't read any for about 30 years. They have no connection to Doctor Who whatsoever, apart from what you get in twisted crossover-writers minds. *g*

Oh I've just noticed it's a tie in to the original version of Human Nature, which involved the 7th Doctor and Benny. You can download that off the BBC too from here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/ebooks/human_nature/index.shtml) in varying formats, or read it online.

I was wondering that, too.

ooh, thanks. Okay, I think I'll read up a bit more on the series before taking a stab at the bigbang stories about them. I'll probably wait to read the stories till I've more time then.

It's a bit weird that there were two of those chalet school ones though

From what [livejournal.com profile] aeron_lanart says it looks like we won't get too confused by it all, but I'm glad yo see I wasn't the only one who had no idea what they were about!

Actually, somewhere around LJ there is a community that is Made Of Crack that has all of Doctor Who past and present as students and teachers in a boarding school. I couldn't tell you for sure if it's specifically a crossover with Chalet School, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Hmm, do I want to try and hunt this puppy down? I saw it aaaaages ago.

well, you do have 20 something bigbangs easily findable at the moment.... but all the present AND past companions? What a handful those lot would be!
