awanderingbard's prompt for my most recent meme.
When Gibbs ordered DiNozzo to keep Annie occupied while he questioned her father he expected, and received, a smartalecky reply, which a quick head slap and glare took care of easily enough. He’d also assumed, after seeing the look of utter terror DiNozzo had on his face while leading the little girl out of the room, that he’d better keep his questions short and simple, since DiNozzo would need some rescuing himself before long.
Despite his attempts it was over forty minutes later before Gibbs made his way to the little girl’s room and was surprised to hear giggling coming from inside. He paused in the doorway, watching as DiNozzo, sitting cross-legged on the floor, valiantly tried to braid the mane of a large purple horse.
“Okay, what about now?” DiNozzo showed his handiwork to Annie who began laughing even louder. “It’s not that bad, is it? Okay, only half the hair’s in there and it’s kind of crooked. Well, really crooked...”
“No, like this.” Annie held out a doll which had two perfect braids in its hair.
“Are you sure Ponisaurus doesn’t want a bow? I can do bows. Sort of.”
Gibbs hid his smile before rapping on the door frame. “Problem, DiNozzo?”
“Boss!” DiNozzo jumped to his feet, the stuffed animal spilling from his lap on the floor. “No, not at all. I was just...” Bending quickly, DiNozzo scooped up the pony and offered it to Annie. “Sorry, but this’ll have to do, I have to leave now.”
“You needs to practice s’more.” She eyed Ponisaurus warily before taking it from DiNozzo. “Thanks for playing wif’ me.”
“You’re welcome, kiddo.” DiNozzo ruffled her hair before he left the room. “Not a moment too soon, Boss,” he whispered to Gibbs as he passed him, “Not a moment too soon.”
