It's that time of year again, karaokegal's Third Annual “Come As You’re Not” fanfic costume party.

Last year I came up with (at the time) terribly atypical costume of a crossover. It was something I'd never done before and wound up morphing into a 12k epic, a length I've only reached once since (for my bigbang). But this year, I'm clueless. Crossovers have become commonplace for me, as have writing in different fandoms other than TW/DW. I've written dark, slash, AU, even touched on het with a few drabbles.

So, what am I not? HELP!!!!

Have you written femslash?

no. *eep* I can't really write for women though. I mean, I do, but they tend to be as part of the team or interacting with Jack

When I say "slash" understand that I don't necessarily mean OMG Sex Scenes! Actually - it might be interesting to try something that's just from a female character's POV, not relationshippy or slash at all, if that's something you've never done!

Huh, I was about to say *I've* never written anything shippy, but now I vaguely recall an April Fools Day thing with Jack and Ianto and implied nookie.

I write terrible sex scenes. There's a reason for the fade to black... but female POV? hmmm....

This year's party is being difficult. Last year's costume was so easy. *sigh*

try a new fandom? trying writing from the pov of a minor character? write in a fandom you haven't written in a long time.

hmmm, I'll have to think about that. I'm not sure there are any fandoms I think I know enough in to write about though. But it's a thought!

What about 1st person POV? I'm thinking of going AU, which is something I've never attempted before.

Assuming I can find the time. *eyes growing WIP file*

ooh, I think I've only ever done first person once. hmmmm

If you want a real challenge, go for 1st person present. It's a real battle to get it readable, but it's worth the effort.

Or what about something that's pure angst? Your stories always have humour and/or a happy ending. What about something really bleak? We'd never recognise you...

Definitely not! I wrote angst for last year's and it's hard. Worth the effort, but so difficult not to slip in the joke or note of hope. They came out quite well, but still. It made a half-decent costume :D

your drabble set for the party was really great. it made me seek out chocolate, but it was great!

please please don't do utterly bleak! I'll pimp you to some new fandoms instead!!

Smut? Can't think of much else you haven't/wouldn't write...

I'm not very good at smut. Well, sex scenes in general.

This was so much easier last time around. I'd only written maybe 20 or 30 things and all were Jack related!

Or MST something that you really don't like if you can't bring yourself to write something you just *don't* do. That's what I'm thinking of doing as over the years I've pretty much written everything, even if it wasn't under this name and isn't on LJ. The only thing I've never done is RP slash; I've done RP fic though so I'm not sure if it counts and like I was telling jades, writing any of my other squicks would make it unsafe for a general community! Plus I'd have to research and as they're squicks I'd rather not.

Maybe we should make a list of things that we *don't* associate with you at least some of the time and you could picks something. Actually, that isn't a bad idea. Maybe we could do it as an flist thing?

I'd love a list of things you don't think I write.

Some I couldn't write though, if you know what I mean. RP in general (let alone slash) just squicks me. Full, detailed sex scenes of any nature come out like crap. And D/s comes out childish. These sorts of things wouldn't be unsafe for LJ necessarily, but not something I'd be proud of.

Yup.

That's the only way I could bring myself to write something that really isn't me.

so you'd write an atypical fic and then spork it?

Something like that.

Or do a piss-take of some of the more purple prose that's out there (done to a T by Robin in her Trek Fic Rampant Love Prongs (http://www.strangefits.com/robin/voy.html) scroll down the page to get to the fic).

I have lots of other stuff to be writing first though, so I might not bother.

true, that is not me, but I also couldn't write it. It's not my cup of tea.

The problem is, for the most part, the stuff I haven't writen (rps, D/s, serious slash or het) is because it's not something I *can* write.

You've said you can't write Rose - you could try something with her. Or try something straight that you've only done in crossover form.

I sort of want to play too, but there's a reason I don't write what I don't write. I suppose I could do extreme angst - I haven't really done angst before. There's certainly a lot to be had around Miranda's death.

I *may* have figured out what to do. Not sure but _medley_ and I might wind up commingling our talents to a scary degree.

You did do het, but it was only a ficlet, you could write a full big story! (Not Gwack though, please no Jack/Gwen!!!)
