Teyla’s brow furrowed as she watched Colonel Sheppard approach. He was being furtive, and it was more than him trying to hide a slight limp. A few feet away he paused, half turned as if he was going to walk away, but then lunged forward and pressed a small bundle into her hands.
“Here,” he said abruptly, almost sheepishly.
“Thank you,” she replied politely, unsure what she’d been handed.
“It’s for,” he began, gesturing the baby sleeping happily in his sling. “Well.... I’ve been emailing back and forth with Dave a bit lately, and when I realized, I mean when you told me about... Anyway, I thought....” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Sorry about the wrapping.”
Carefully untying the rope, the tee shirt opened up to reveal a small, homemade doll in the shape of some sort of Earth animal. Her confusion must have shown on her face because the Colonel blurted out, “It’s a horse. It was mine actually. My mom made it. I....I wanted you to have it. It’s name is Patches. It’s okay if you don’t want it or anything, you can just toss it.”
He turned to leave, but she reached out and grabbed his arm, and pulled him close, their foreheads touching for a moment. “Thank you, John,” she whispered. “Thank you."
