“I love you Jeanne.”

Even as he says it, he knows he’s being stupid. He’s battered and broken, lost in the chaos and looking for a port in the storm. Paula’s dead. He was right there and she was right there and then she wasn’t and she was dead while he’s still alive. And he’s still not sure of where things stand anywhere anymore, because Gibbs came back and shoved him aside, and he was happy to give back the reins, but he wonders sometimes if the team ever believed in him the way they do Gibbs and he thinks it shouldn’t matter, but it does and it hurts and this thing with Jeanne was supposed to be a job, just a job, but now she has her arms around him and he’s sinking into her embrace, sinking, and there’s no way this’ll end well, it can’t, and he’s certain it won’t, but for now, all he can do is hug her back as tight as he can. In reality, he’s practically clinging to her, which he knows is silly, if not down right pathetic, but he doesn’t know what else to do. What else he could do. Except fall.
