Bouncy post of bounciness + fic

Now that the author reveal has happened over at [livejournal.com profile] sgahcchallenges 's Last Fic Writer Standing for round#1, I can officially post my entry:

Title: Rude Awakenings
Pairing/Warning/Rating: SGA fandom, no spoilers, rated G
Word Count: 446
Beta:  [livejournal.com profile] mad_jaks
Summary: Sheppard's a little mad when he wakes up.
Author's Note: I'm happy to report the incredibly awesome news that I WON!!!  I can't stop bouncing at the news and can't quite believe I took first place!!!  :)

“This was not my fault. I couldn’t have known it was mislabeled in the database. I refuse to take the blame for this. There’s no way I could have known what would happen. None. Whatsoever. You have to tell him that, Teyla. He’ll listen to you. This was in no way shape or form my fault, right?”

“Of course it was not, Rodney. I am sure Colonel Sheppard will not blame you.”

“He might kill you though.”

“Do not listen to Ronon, Rodney. It was an honest mistake that anyone could have made.”

“Yes, yes, it was an honest mistake, but with what some might consider extremely horrible and life altering consequences, but not for me of course. Oh no, all I got was the privilege of standing there and watching as flames, flames shot out and barbecued him!”

“The doc said Sheppard would be fine.”

“Yes, Doctor Keller seemed certain when she explained to us that the burns to his face were quite minor.”

“His face? You think it’s his face I’m worried about? I mean, yes, it’d be truly terrible if the Colonel ended up scarred for life or something, and obviously I don’t want anything to happen to his eyes, because can you imagine that man if he was told he couldn’t fly anymore? Or fight for that matter? Although, the idea of being able to get out of paperwork would probably appeal to him, but that’s not what I meant. This is Colonel Sheppard we’re talking about here. Have you looked at him lately? Didn’t you see what that fire did to him?”

“Hmmm? R’dny? Wha’s goin’ on?”

“Colonel? You are awake, that is wonderful. Ronon and I will go find the doctor while Rodney explains what has happened.”

“M’ face hurts.”

“Yes, well, that’s what happens when you get up close and personal with fire, Colonel. Now, remember, I told you I wasn’t one hundred percent sure what the device was used for before I had you activate it and no matter what anyone else might say you look fine, just some first degree burns and nothing was more than a little bit of singed....”

“Singed.... Wha’ was singed, Rodney?”

“It’s barely noticeable. I swear. Jennifer only had to cut an inch or two, well maybe three, off. It looks fine. Honest.”

“Inches? What? Tell me you didn’t....”

“It’s fine. Really. What is it with you and your obsession with your hair anyway? Besides, aren’t you military types supposed to have a crewcut? Regulations and all that. Sheppard? It’ll grow back, in no time flat, really. And it looks good like that, different, but... Hey! Let go! Jennifer? HELP!!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! And we've got the assignment for round 2: 300 - 500 words again, at least two characters must have H/C but an o.c. has to be the POV *puts on thinky cap*

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] nakeisha.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, thank you.

It was so cute I had to icon it :-)

Will you take part again?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The fic writer standing thing is a 'vote off the island" kind of contest. 30 or so people signed up. Two get voted off each week (others may drop out or not fulfil the prompt so leave the contest that way) For each prompt the stories are posted anonymously and you vote for your top three and bottom two (you have to give reasons) and you can't vote for yourself (and anyone can vote, whether you wrote or not) So, winning, while great, is only a "this week YAY" sort of thing because in theory I could get voted out next week.

But, I didn't consider myself a strong SGA writer so I'm all kinds of happy about this.

The next prompt is already up and we have a week or so to submit our stories and then there will be a week for reading/voting

It's the fic version of Last Icon Maker Standing, then?

I always think people who take part in these things are brave.

I bet you are.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
yep- that sort of thing- this week there are 28 people eligible to enter. I wasn't going to enter, because I really am not the sort that toots their own horn, but a friend said she'd enter if I did so....

[identity profile] nakeisha.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, peer pressure . . . Been there, done that . . .

I wish you well again and even more importantly, I think, I hope you enjoy yourself.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! And it's been good, having the prod, as a writer. I've been using the ncisdrabble100 prompts similarly- trying to write for them each and every week. Half the time I think I'll never make it work, but eventually it does. A few I haven't been totally thrilled with, but some of the others are ones I would have skipped but kept at it and came up with something I really wound up liking.

[identity profile] nakeisha.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
A prod can be good.

I too try to do the NCISDrabble100 each week and have succeeded thus far and I'm also digging away at the past prompts. I know what you mean with, sometimes the things we wouldn't necessarily have 'chosen' to do, do turn out the best.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I've managed one for each week since prompt 90. I thought about trying to do all the old ones, but without the extra poke-poke of 'get this week's in' I haven't been too successful.

I need to take a page out of your book and try writing from the POV of some other characters, mine are almost always Gibbs or Tony

[identity profile] nakeisha.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I've managed a few old ones, but not as many as I'd hoped - but they aren't going anywhere, so . . .

You should indeed. I've really enjoyed, and am still enjoying, trying out the other people - some I find easier and am more comfortable writing than others, but it's good fun.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
and for a drabble it's a little less intimidating

[identity profile] nakeisha.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

I'd written them quite a lot in my G/D stories, but even so there's a difference between that and writing them in their own drabble. But it's fun.
