After Donna, Donna of all people, turned down the opportunity to travel with him, the Doctor felt a little at odds with the universe, adrift so to speak. Going places, seeing things, was always better with someone by his side. Donna had actually been quite right about that. But who? He was cut off from Rose, and while he could visit Jack... well, it was best not to open that can of worms.

There were many old friends he could stop by to see, he realized. It had been wonderful to see Sarah Jane pop up at the school and she seemed to enjoy helping save the children, but... she had made it quite clear she’d moved on with her life; it was unlikely she’d be interested in another interruption. The same could probably be said for most of his former companions. Liz was happily married, Ben and Polly growing old together, and Ace was probably off doing something he’d best not think too hard about....

But what would his welcome be? Or should he honor their decision to walk away and leave them alone?

Of course, not all had chosen to walk away. Some had that decision made for them. Zoe and Jamie had been taken from him as cruelly as Rose, if not more so, their memories wiped of all mention of him. Jamie, perhaps, had suffered the worst, dropped back into the Battle of Culloden without so much as a backwards glance. The Doctor decided a quick peek was in order, just a brief glimpse to see how Jamie had fared. What would the harm be in that?

Jamie may have forgotten their adventures, but the Doctor had memories enough for both of them. Course laid in, the TARDIS humming to the vortex’s tune, April 1746 just ahead; the Doctor grabbed his coat. He had old friend to see. An adventure to be had.
