Silent Symphony
Title: Silent Symphony
Pairing/Warning/Rating: NCIS fandom, none, rated G
Word Count: 200
Summary: Gibbs and Abby can say a lot without speaking.
Author's Note: Written for awanderingbard. Please note, as I tried to demonstrate below, that ASL has a very different grammar and sentence structure than spoken English.
Gibbs was sitting in the visitor’s chair glaring at the floor when he felt eyes on him. Doctors don’t know yet, he signed before he even looked up.
Abby wasn’t crying, but it was close. Know what?
If, Gibbs started, before shrugging and gesturing at the monitors.
If return to job with us he? If those machines need he forever? If? she asked, biting her lip and trailing off.
Yes, if. That if.
Die? Her breath began to hitch.
Hey, no. Don’t. He reached out, giving her arm a quick squeeze. This DiNozzo we’re talking about here. He used the name sign he’d created for Tony, head slap made with a D.
Tony, she corrected, using her sign, the sign for police, but with a T for Tony instead of a C for cop.
Fine, Tony. He used her sign. See, nice, I nice.
Always nice, you. You staying here?
Gibbs nodded. Tonight anyway.
You and me keep him company, together. Abby signed, and plunked down in the chair next to Gibbs. After a minute she leaned her head on his shoulder and together they listened to the symphony of whirs and beeps of the medical equipment around the bed.
