BRRRRRRRR

-21F before windchill here today (that's -29C) somewhere between -40f (which is -40C) and -45F (-43C... hey, that's higher!  No fair!).  BRRRR.

My internet is spotty as a result.  Apparently it doesn' t like it when it's this cold.  WHO DOES?!?!?

It's 51 here.

I'm suddenly not all that cold.

The governor declared it wasn't cold enough for a statewide emergency school closing. That only happens once every 20 years or so. I did call my kids' school to see if it was cancelled and they said "No, but there probably won't be outdoor recess." Considering the high's supposed to *possibly* be -10 I can't say I'm surprised.

Sheesh! We end up closing our schools for weather related incidents at least once a year, it seems. The latest, of course, was the 10 days my kid was out of school for Ike. Not having electricity kinda killed the instructional mood, I guess. :-) If we get an ice storm this year, we'll be out again, but probably not for more than a day. What sucks is that we only get 10 days off that don't have to be made up, so they'd have to make up any more days at the end of the year.

Very glad I'm in Liverpool UK where *really* cold is -5C. We've got there once so far this Winter, and I only noticed that because I was awake at 4 in the morning!

*hugs British maritime weather and the gulf stream*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-15 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
that's about 23F, which sounds all kinds of lovely about now... but everything's relative. I bet you were cold!

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-15 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
We are so lucky with the Gulf Stream and the maritime climate, it really makes a difference! Liverpool is actually 53 25 North, which is the same latitude as Newfoundland.

[identity profile] nnwest.livejournal.com 2009-01-15 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations! You, like we (Iowa is -24F), are colder than the North and South Poles today. Aren't you glad to Know that? :)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-15 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
And outstate MN is even worse. Err... YAY for being colder than the poles?

[identity profile] nnwest.livejournal.com 2009-01-15 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's a claim to fame at any rate. Don't know if it's necessarily worth celebrating. Unless it's by crawling back under the covers and staying home.

... How is human life possible under such conditions? Does. Not. Compute.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-15 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
it really doesn't. *nods*

[identity profile] cold-ember-32.livejournal.com 2009-01-15 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy crap on a cracker! Where on earth do you live for that kind of weather?! I know that where I'm from (upstate NY) is mega cold right now and is hanging out below zero for the most part, but good lord! Makes me very, very happy that I moved to Virginia...

Hope that weather gets less, ya know, Siberian for ya soon!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-15 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Minnesota. It's atypically cold, even for January, something like the coldest it's been in 40 years with the windchill.

Moving sounds good right about now

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2009-01-15 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It was in the 20s here last night, windchill in the teens this morning, and everyone is talking about how amazingly cold it is! Hee. Though like we've said before, it's all in what you're prepared for - I had on extra layers (even yoga pants under my dress) but the wind still went right through even my coat and 3x-wrapped Doctor Who scarf and chilled me.

I think I'm with chatona, though, the temps you're experiencing? Does not compute. I can't even imagine. Our houses would literally crack open and fall apart, I think. We certainly wouldn't have any water, the pipes would all be frozen. I remember one winter when I was a kid, we laid hay bales over the ground where the water line was, all the way from the house to the well.

Stay inside and drink lots of cocoa!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-15 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm SO glad I don't have to go into work, because a skirt? In this?!? No thank you!

ooh, cocoa sounds nice. *scurries off*

[identity profile] stackcats.livejournal.com 2009-01-15 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
...Bloody hell. That's, um. Cold.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-15 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
my thoughts exactly. brrrr

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2009-01-15 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Can. Not. Imagine. *brings blankets and cocoa and fuzzy socks*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-15 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
*giggles hysterically at your icon* Ta muchly. I have 3 pairs of socks on now. even though I've turned the heat up

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2009-01-15 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant to use this icon, but when the comment posted, I thought, well, that works too. *g*

Ahhh, ouch. We just got out of a cold snap like that. Now we kind of miss it, as opposed to a city full of water on ice.

Bundle up, OK?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I was wondering if you had it worse or better than I did. Of course it's JUST as bad today, if not a little worse. Less wind, but lower temp to start so the windchill's about the same. The weather men said it was supposed to be better today and it was supposed to climb above 0. LIARS

[identity profile] phoenix64.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we were a bit warmer during our cold snap, but it did last talmost three weeks. And yeah, for an entire week the weather people swore it was going to be warmer tomorrow, and it was always as cold if not colder the next day.

Meanwhile in Philly apparently they've closed the schools because it's -4. I feel much less wimpy about complaining about my weather.

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
You know it's bad when even the internet is protesting the cold.

especially since most of its cables are underground
