Gibbs was sanding carefully, but his eyes kept straying to the steps where DiNozzo sat. Of course, he noticed the slight hunch of defeat in DiNozzo’s shoulders and heard his quiet sighs. Aw, hell.

“Tony?” He bit back a curse when DiNozzo jumped to his feet before engaging his brain and nearly fell over.

“Yeah, Boss?”

“Quit it.”

“Quit what?” DiNozzo gave him a blank look. It was obvious he didn’t understand.

“Obsessing over Chip. Over everything that happened.” Obsessions never ended well, for the person obsessing or for anyone around caught up in the obsession. “It wasn’t your fault.”

“Gibbs,” DiNozzo sighed.

Gibbs walked over and grabbed DiNozzo’s chin, just like he had done in the cell, but DiNozzo refused to look him in the eye. “This was not your fault. None of it.”

“But Abby….” DiNozzo tried to turn his head, but Gibbs held firm.

“Abby is fine.” He lifted DiNozzo’s chin a little higher. “There was nothing you could have done. It’s over, and you’re still here. ” Gibbs knew he didn’t have to say anything else, he just waited for the words to sink in. Eventually DiNozzo nodded and Gibbs could see the tension dissipating.

“Right, Boss.”

Tony sat on the steps to Gibbs’s basement, thinking about everything that had happened today: being accused of murder, getting locked in a cell, the accusations in everyone’s eyes, and Abby…. Oh, God. Abby. Chip could have, Chip almost… Abby could have been hurt. If she’d been a little-

“Tony?”

Whipping his head around, he stumbled to his feet. What the hell was he doing, sitting here, moping like a little kid? “Yeah, Boss?” He should go, he really should go, before Gibbs ripped him a new one for being so damned stupid.

“Quit it.”

“Quit what?” Quit bugging him? Quit showing how weak he was? Quit being such a loser?

“Obsessing over Chip. Over everything that happened. It wasn’t your fault.”

Oh, that. Wait, what? Of course it was his fault. “Gibbs,” he started to protest, but then Gibbs was there, grabbing his chin.

“This was not your fault. None of it.”

It was though, Gibbs didn’t understand. “But Abby….”

“Abby is fine. There was nothing you could have done. It’s over, and you’re still here. ” Tony couldn’t help look Gibbs in the eye, seeing the pride and strength reflected in them. Gibbs still believed in him?

“Right, Boss.”
