Hooray for Silurians?

So, watched the second half of the oldschool serial Doctor Who and the Silurians with my son today.  While the story was interesting enough, there were a bunch of brain breaking scientific moments.

The bad guys are called the Silurians because of a brief note in the evil doctor's papers about the Silurian era.  Son looks at me, "I thought it was the Silurian Period?"  But, that really a minor detail, because apparently the creatures call themselves Silurians... err, sure, why not?

The Silurians went into status because they were worried about a planet (what became the moon) crashing into the Earth.  Son looks at me, "what?"

The Silurians hate humans (or Ape-men, as they call them) and explain their plan for humanity telling a story about how they once tried too kill off "the monkeys that stole from their gardens" -- Son pauses the DVD.  "Monkeys?  And Dinosaurs?  At the same time?  These writers didn't pay much attention in science class, did they?"

No they didn't.  We still enjoyed the serial though.

lol Go son!

*hee* it was pretty astute of him!

Aw, your son is smart! But we knew that. I wouldn't have caught the era/period difference.

It's funny, wasn't Doctor Who considered or planned to be educational programming once upon a time? That didn't really work out. Unless it's educational to encourage kids to make models and sets and costumes out of materials you can find in your very own kitchen. *g*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
yeah... it kinda did fail on that educational front, didn't it? At least this serial, anyway. But it did encourage my son to go online and look up the Silurian Period to find out for sure when it was!

i think they ditched the educational bit pretty quickly. Inverting the polarity of the neutron flow, anyone?

[identity profile] snakewhissperer.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
its who. It doesn't always make good scientific sense, let alone actually be internally consistent (thought that is not only explained and expected but its internally consistent in terms of the doctor, if not the universe. Well, mostly)

But its still the Who we know and love.

there certainly is quite a bit of 'turning off the brain' involved in some of the serials. Still fun to watch though!

[identity profile] snakewhissperer.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
absolutely, and still my favorite series ;-)

besides, its fun to be able to look at it from a historical context and shake your head and say 'oh boy'

Now you can watch Sea Devils! *bounces* (Heh--somehow the bouncing and the icon do not mix.)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Medley!!! *hugs*

No. The Master should never bounce! And yes! I already put in the request for Sea Devils!

*winces* Have I been that scarce? Sorry! *hugs* And yay for Sea Devils and old school Doctor/Master-ishness.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you didn't reply to my email and then I didn't see you around all weekend and I was getting worried. I am a worrywart. It's the Jewish mother in me.

I should have Sea Devils early next week! *bounces*

Email? I don't think I've gotten any from you that I haven't answered? *huggles you for worrying*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I sent you something Friday, begging for a beta. I assumed you were gone over the weekend. *hides, I am just silly that way*

He loves who, but sometimes it breaks his brain just a bit. :)
