It was a picture of Jack Harkness. The real Captain Jack Harkness. He held it carefully, cupped in both hands.
“Tosh said you would have been so proud that I took your name.” There was a pleading tone to his voice. “But I didn’t take it as some sort of noble gesture. It was a con and I needed a cover. I knew I couldn’t fake a British accent well enough, but with a little practice, an American one would work. Well, passably enough to be in a country thousands of miles away anyway. So I combed the records and found you. I didn’t know...” He tried to explain. “I never looked past the data. You were never more than a name, a rank, a persona I could slip on. I never planned on keeping the name. A month or two till the con played out and then off to another planet for another con with another name. I didn’t see the harm. How could I have been so stupid? When I think about what nearly happened.... What I almost caused.... You would have been so ashamed. Does what I do now make up for it? Is it possible to make up for it?” He sighed. “She said you’d be proud because here I am, saving the world all over again. But it’s easy to save the world when you can’t die.”
He gently slipped the picture back into his pocket.
“You set the bar so high Captain. You showed me what being a true hero really meant... and I'm afraid I’ll never measure up.”
