While I was awandering....

I've been trying to take a lot of walks to get some exercise and one of the places I've been walking is a trail around a pond/marsh. This time of year there are always lots of babies so I brought my camera along to take pictures!

What I thought was interesting was the difference in size among all the different Canadian Geese goslings. All these photos were taken last Wednesday.

one of the middle sized guys:

A little one:

I didn't get pictures of all the different sizes, but here are various ones with their parents, compare how different they all are:

And just because they are cute the lone mallard family there:

I suspect a very few days makes a great deal of difference in size, working under the asssumption that all the eggs hatch at 'about the same time'.

My son's class had an incubator and a dozen chook eggs for a while; they got to name the chicks as they hatched (the black one got dubbed 'Darth Vader') and did daily weighings.

(cannot find chicken icon, settles for owl)

I suppose, it just appears as such a dramatic different at the moment. The largest babies are maybe 2/3rd the size of the parents already while the littlest ones are still so small.

Ohhh, how sweet!

When would I not want to see baby ducks and geese? :)

They're adorable!

Some people are not swayed by the cuteness that is baby birdies. *shrugs* weirdos. :)

So. Very. Cute. Floofy baby birds ftw.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Floofy is the best word to describe them!!

Honk! Honk!

Very cute.

I got honked at quite a bit actually, and hissed at. But they were very cute!

Ohhhhhhh. Goslings! Ducklings! Thank you for sharing. I love them. And I'm glad you have pleasant places to walk to! Good for you for keeping it up. :)

I'm a little worried about the birds, MN is SO dry right now, we haven't had significant rain since April sometime. The shot with the large family? The water should be up to almost right behind the mama goose.

But yes. Exercise is good. Despite what my thighs think

Oh, and you have some important waterways on migration routes in your area, if I recall. Drought bad! ::thinks good thoughts for rain and healthy fowl populations::

They keep predicting rain... but it hasn't happened yet. Other parts of the state have gotten plenty. There was flood warnings in April in the Fargo-Morhead area with the possibility of the river jumping it's banks. There seems to be a lot less geese and ducks around this year, especially the mallards, I was surprised that there was only one family.

What lovely pictures - thank you for sharing these.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
can't go wrong with goslings and ducklings, right? :)

[identity profile] nakeisha.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed you can't.

Bless! We have swans and mallards, but no geese. They're so fluffy!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I *really* wanted to try to touch the baby geese. It was hard to be good and not do it.

Eee! Fuzzy baby birds!

Thanks so much for posting these.
