Caffeine Fumes

Title: Caffeine Fumes
Pairing/Rating/Warning: none, rated G
Word Count: 100
Summary:  "I have measured out my life with coffee spoons."  ~T.S. Eliot
Author's Note: Written for the "Future" challenge at [community profile] tw100

Java.  Cup of Joe.  Insomnia in a cup.  Lifeblood.  Black Gold.  Go juice.  Nectar of Life.   Mud.  Elixir of life.  Jet fuel.  Liquid life.  Liquid death.  Coffee.

Jack knew there would be a time, in the far off distant future, when the drink would be so rare it was damned near impossible to get, no matter how willing you might be to sell you soul for one more sip.  And he knew he’d have to suffer through that time, again.  But until then...

“Another cup, Sir?  What is this, your seventh?”

“Thanks, Ianto.  Actually it’s my ninth, but who's counting?”

Nice. But a tiny little nitpick, I think you meant "who's" not "whose."

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, that would make more sense, wouldn't it? *sigh* thanks

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't going to mention it, but since someone else started the nitpicking... 'how much willing' doesn't make sense. Unless I'm missing something.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
no, I just can't write. fixed now

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
COFFEE. I'm actually afraid to imagine a world without it. There'll be tea though, right? Tell me there will be tea...

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure there will be caffeinated beverages just not coffee.

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Speaking as a barista, it looks like a bleak future for mankind.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
and speaking as a coffeaholic I agree wholeheartedly

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
hey there's still gonna be booze and juice so things aren't so bad. I can take this calmly because I don't drink coffee. I'm not allowed caffeine anyway.

In the 18th century people would go to chocolate houses, so no worries about no coffee.

Sorry I just popped in to pet your Hex icon ♥

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Hullo! And yay for Hex.

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure there will always be some substance you can steep in boiling water, but if coffee beans have gone away, I fear for the authentic tea leaf as well!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor Jack... no coffee is a terribly bleak future, isn't it?

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll have to start stocking the cupboards with BIG boxes of PG Tips o_O

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
::clings to tea::

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. Well, that certainly makes sense of that one :) Just right.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
the world is a better place with coffee in it

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-11-14 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Since I don't have a "What idiot caffeinated Jack" icon, this will have to do. *g*

Like Jades said, that explains a few things! ...Are there Dr. Peppers in the future, or should I start stockpiling now?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
well... I think we're safe, but a little stockpiling couldn't hurt. *G*

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
My dad stockpiled Diet Dr. Thunders (the WalMart brand) once. Hee. He stored them behind my bed so that I had a platform of Dr. Thunder cases to crawl over. Unfortunately, they actually lost their freshness after a couple of years.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
awww, poor dad! Methinks Jack could rig up something with stasis chambers thought, to keep things fresh...

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Good point, they're keeping bodies indefinitely, surely Torchwood has some technology they could adapt for Really Important Things like legal drugs in danger of extinction.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
and coffee certainly qualifies as a "Really Important Thing" (and certainly deserves the caps you gave it)

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think Dr Pepper is safe as long as Dallas is still here.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-11-15 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think you have a point!

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I love your summary, it's perfect. Good "why" drabble, too. :) It reminds me of those folk stories like "Why the Dog Chases His Tail" and such.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I will not admit how long i combed through coffee quotes to find that one. Is it sad that this is all I could come up with for Jack's future? *shrug* Jack does seem to have a thing for coffee though. *babbles*

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it sad that this is all I could come up with for Jack's future?

No! Jack's time (it's hard to even tell what "future" means with him) is so confusing, I think it's best to focus on concrete things, anyway.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
true- just what is Jack's future? He's still in his past and will be for tens of thousands of years, sort of... *brain hurts*

Very cute. Poor Jack - I'm sure coffee will be around for a very long time yet though! :-)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-14 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
although, the way he drinks it.. maybe he's the cause of the shortage? :D

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
won't there be entire planets raising coffee in the future? Maybe not real Earth coffee but something similar.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-11-15 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh. That'd be ironic. Yes, Jack, you drank all the coffee in the KNOWN UNIVERSE.

Jack: Well...it was good?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I believe it!

[identity profile] eumenidis.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
I guess the exact combination of factors that make for drinkable coffee are difficult to find off of Earth.

I think we also now know why Jack doesn't sleep.
