Sunday comic strips

Random question, but what would you consider a comic strip that everyone would know? Or what character (with what character traits) from a particular comic?

(i.e. Snoopy from 'Peanuts'= that dancing beagle, snarky talking penguin= Opus from 'Bloom County')

Dennis the Menace (the little brat)
Garfield (the fat orange cat who's lazy and likes lasagna)
That Siamese cat with the bad attitude (though obviously, not everyone can recall his name, lol.)

Garfield is what made me start to think of it.

Who is the Siamese cat?

Well if I could remember his name I'd have told you... *g*

*googles "comic strip, cat"*
*sieves through millions of "Garfield" hits*

Ah! "Get Fuzzy!"

(This may only apply for Americans)

Cathy = always freaking out about things like clothes shopping and her weight and her boyfriend

Doonesbury = liberal political and social commentary

Ziggy = sweet but always has bad luck

The Far Side = wacky, ironic situations

Calvin & Hobbes = little boy with a big imagination, and his tiger; philosophical

The Family Circle = sweet and/or cloying (YMMV) observations by/about children and family

oooh, good list, somehow I'd forgotten all about Calvin and Hobbes

Everyone in the world? Because I've never heard of Opus.

I didn't know whether or not "Bloom County" made it across the pond. This is Opus (http://vonschack.com/wp-content/uploads/opus.gif).

What are some typical and common comic strips there that everyone would know?

[identity profile] stackcats.livejournal.com 2009-08-23 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I don't think I've ever seen Bloom County.

Snoopy and Garfield would be the two big ones. Can't think of any more, off the top of my head. Maybe Calvin and Hobbes too.

But you do know Garfield, excellent. Thanks!

And Dilbert. I think most people know Dilbert.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-08-23 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, I can't forget Dilbert!

Back when I was in junior high and high school, our state had two statewide newspapers, and the one my dad subscribed to didn't run Bloom County. The only reason I knew about it was because my friend's dad got the other newspaper, which did carry Bloom County, and she told me about Opus. Otherwise, I don't see much in pop culture about it that I would have actually noticed if I didn't already know about Opus through my friend.

I would think Garfield and Peanuts would be the big ones, even internationally. I saw Garfield and Snoopy knockoffs in China.

They've both been around for a long time too. 30+ years for Garfield and what, 50? for Peanuts.
