Stargate Universe

So they're ripping off "The Last Starfighter"?

lolol

Blatantly so! And Armageddon, I noticed. But Christopher McDonald is no Bruce Willis!

So very, very true. *sighs*

I'm still not even sure where they're going with this show - in two hours, they could have given a better idea, but instead they were just stuck in the dark on an ugly ship with the women being clingy and the men being unlikeable or boring. I want it to be an Odyssey themed show, because I like those and it would make sense, but from the pilot I can't tell if it will. But I don't remember being very impressed or drawn in by the SGA pilot (or the first two seasons, for that matter). I'm willing to give it a few more eps to get interesting, so I hope they use their potential!

At least I knew the character's names by the end of "Rising" (the SGA premiere) I had to look them up in IMDB for SGU and I still can't remember most of them. I'm not even sure who is suppose to be the 'stars.' Given who got the screentime and plots in "Air" I'd have assumed the Lt (Scott), the medic, Eli and Rush (the main scientist guy) with *maybe* the Colonel (Young?) and the senator's daughter. But the promo pictures and ads stress Lou Diamond Phillips (who had a cameo if anything in the premiere) and Ming Na's IOA representive person (who barely had any lines) and NOT the Lt or the anger management SGT who had been in discipline before the raid.

And of all the characters many are fairly uninteresting or unlikeable so far in my opinion. I'll watch it a bit more but I'm FAR from interested!

I haven't seen *any* of the ads or promo materials, and going strictly by the first two hours of the show, I had the same impression as you. I actually looked up Ming Na because of all the (three?) women we saw, she was the only one who didn't seem inclined to fall apart easily, and I would be happy if she has a bigger role in the show than what we've seen so far. The Wikipedia info also says she's the first openly gay character in the SG universe, so on a meta-level that's welcome.

I thought Lou Diamond Phillips died in the first episode! Maybe in the promos they were doing like they did with Torchwood, put Suzie in all the promo shots so that you'd be expecting her to remain a member of the cast. But with Suzie, that was a major shock-payoff, whereas with LDP we barely knew him and he was just another character in a crowd as far as I could tell.

No idea. Unfortunately most of the press I found was 'gatefail' about various issues and stupidities within the storylines coming up. You're probably better off missing most of that

LOL

I feel like they're trying to appeal a bit more to the Battlestar Galactica crowd with this one.

Major points for the Stargate tutorial with Daniel Jackson, though. Also, I'm sort of happy I get to use this icon more.

The Last Starfighter bit was the 'solve the game get a job!' thing. But yeah, once they got on "THE DESTINY" (what a lame-ass name for a ship) it was very BSG-esque. I hated that aspect of BSG.

Loved the Daniel DVDs!

I'm really hoping we get back to some more classic SG, eventually, but I have my doubts.

tptb have said many, many times that they didn't want this to be STARGATE ( as in just another stargate) guess they got what they wanted....

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Way to alienate your ten-years-loyal fan base.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-06 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
But those people aren't in the 18-25 year old group that advertisers want, they're not even in the 18-35 year old group that is their second goal...

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
You know what'd be really terrifying? If my brother, who is definitely in that second group, ended up liking this new series. It'd be so awkward.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-07 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Why, because you dislike it?

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and because he's spent so much of his life mocking my love of Stargate.

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
I KNOW. I will never understand him. He's the normal one in the family.

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-10-08 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
It's a bit frightening.

[identity profile] phoenix64.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
My main problem with that one was how it wasn't like The Last Starfighter actually: the game in TLS was about judging a set of skills whereas in SGU it was about a specific problem. Except divorced from any actual application (like when they used it later to dial the ninth chevron and it failed) how could you or the computer program you set up know the problem had been solved unless you already knew what the solution was supposed to be? Seriously, riddle me that Robert Carlyle.

I am so tired of the Lost in Space trope. If you've got nothing else going for you except that, please go back to the drawing board. Oh, we have a megalomaniacal scientist? Srsly? Drawing board. Go. Back. Now.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's 'Lost In Space' does that mean Rush is Dr. Smith? Who's the robot with the flaily arms? *Sighs*
