Welcome New Friends!

So, as the LJ friending meme seems to be winding down I thought I'd do an introduction post so friends old and new can see what they've gotten themselves into by friending me.

I discovered livejournal through Torchwood and for the longest time Jack Harkness was my fandom. I read, wrote and had numerous discussions about him and the rest of the Torchwood team and that spread to include Doctor Who as well (in all incarnations as I'd been a Classic Who fan from way back). After a bit it occurred to me to spread out fannishly; I watched NCIS, why not find comms for it and participate in it as well? Some fandoms I eased into via crossovers (Jack Harkness is so easily crossed into other fandoms) and others through my flist (which somehow I developed despite not really meaning to).

Currently my fannishly activity has cooled a bit. In some cases it's due to a lack of interest in current canon (I never did finish watching Miracle Day and current NCIS episodes make me angry) but is also a result of a lack of new canon (Sherlock S3 isn't until when?) and the fact my flist had gotten rather inactive, which I'm hoping will change due to the friending meme.

I write a lot, or try try to anyway, and generally write short. Approximately a third of my stories are drabbles (and I'm of the belief that a drabble = 100 words exactly). I don't have a true sense of how many of my stories are ficlets (between 101-999 words) or full length stories (longer than 1k) but only four are greater than 10k- 2 Torchwood bigbangs, a Jack Harkness in Atlantis Torchwood/SGA crossover and a Merlin fic. So don't expect to see a lot of epics here.

Do expect a lot of fandoms though, I think the most recent count put the list somewhere at about 60 different ones. Quite a number, however, are once offs, either a [livejournal.com profile] yuletide present, written for [livejournal.com profile] consci_fan_mo, a comment-fic fill or a wacky crossover.

So, that's me. Fannishly speaking anyway. But, since I'm a lot better at fannish squee than talking about anything else, it's probably the best place to start. Stop on by and say hi or take a gander at the ficlist links I've on my sidebar and see if anything strikes your fancy (they need a bit of an overhauling, sorry) if you'd like. Welcome to my LJ and I hope you enjoy your stay!

Hello! Glad to have become friends!

I will have to explore your fics soon! Jack is one of my most favorite characters ever created :)

*waves* Welcome!

I could wax poetic about Jack for AGES, there are just so many layers to him!

Hello! I'm with you, I'm hoping to really start engaging with my Flist again after the meme.

I'll have to check out some more of your drabbles; I really like the one I've read already!

Yay for active flists!

I'm as guilty as the next person of not engaging with my flist as much as I used to. Part of the drift was due to the busy and part was people moving onto fandoms that I wasn't involved with myself, but Sherlock seems to have stemmed that tide somewhat. Having said that, the emergence of Elementary seems to be like marmite to my flist.

Fandom drift can definitely make things difficult. Lord knows I'm guilty of that.

I wish I liked Elementary more than I do. It's just doesn't engage me.

One can never have too many baked goods :)

Will have to work on the number of caffeinated beverage icons I keep on hand, just for commenting in your journal.

I heartily approve! :)

Hi

I used to be a big Torchwood fan. I really loved Jack and Ianto. Once they killed Ianto, I lost interest. I saw scraps of Miracle Day and it just wasn't Torchwood. I still like to read fanfci occasionally.

*waves* Hi!!! Miracle Day really wasn't at all like the original show had felt like, was it? *sigh* Oh well, luckily there's always fandom!

[identity profile] cymbalism219.livejournal.com 2013-01-26 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Hooray and hello, new friend! Jack Harkness is a really excellent fandom! I was so in love with him in season 1 & 2 of Torchwood, but it's been years since I rewatched the show.

I posted a meme (http://cymbalism219.livejournal.com/152071.html) as my getting-to-know-you endeavor. Feel free to jump in if there's a character you're curious about (if I have't already answered it . . . ) and I will ask you one back! ;D

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2013-01-26 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't rewatched in ages either. I really should (the best episodes anyway, there are a few I'd rather not relive).

I shall go look at your meme now! :)

I couldn't make it through Miracle Day either. I keep intending to go back and try again, but S4 lost the campiness of the first two seasons (which, for all that we had a whole team, were basically about Jack and his, ahem, love of anything that moves) and the quality of writing was nowhere near that of Children of Earth and I just... couldn't. It was just so awful. The acting was awful, the script was awful, the whole package was awful when compared to the first three seasons.

Oooh, I'm going to have to check out your Torchwood big bangs. There is not enough long fic in this fandom. :D

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2013-01-27 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
The whole package really was awful, wasn't it? *sigh* I did try to get through it, but.. blergh. I just couldn't.

My two bigbangs are Legends and Legacies (on AO3 here (http://archiveofourown.org/works/65367)), which is most of the team (Jack, Ianto and Tosh) going to New York to follow up on a case Jack worked on in the '50s (the case is based around the 'true' stories about a haunted lake)

and Break and Brace (on my LJ here (http://donutsweeper.livejournal.com/196362.html)) which is a bit of a crossover with Classic Who and has the whole team trying to figure out a pattern to the rift's latest weirdness.

Both are around 20k. Hope you like them!

It felt like a cross between a bad spy thriller and an American cop show. RTD should not try writing cop shows, it is not where his talents lie.

Hee, I look forward to reading them now that I have time!
