I am 100% done with technology

I am not very technologically knowledgeable. Maybe it's my age and that I didn't grow up with using it intuitively like my kids, maybe it's just how my brain works. But in general I know how to use it, but not any of the deeper how it works, how to muck about with the coding or anything like that. Between a lack of money and desire I don't tend to have the newest tech or even upgrade what I have that often. I have an ancient desktop, a 4 or 5 yr old laptop and an ipod touch 4. No tablet. No smart phone. (No cellphone of any kind, actually.)

While there are a number of games I play on my ipod, its primary use is for checking my mail and the weather, some googling and, most importantly, an ereader, because my brain is stupid and I have trouble shutting it off so I wind up reading old familiar fanfics to try to soothe it before I can fall asleep.

Of late a few of my apps were hanging and not working so I updated my ipod last night which turned out to be a HUGE mistake. Now nearly everything will either not load or crash within a minute of loading. *sigh* Which means I'll be spending most of the afternoon trying to figure out how to either undo the update or.. I don't even know.

Ugh. Technology.

Here, have a donut to take the edge off of the technology woes. Also, I find it oddly consoling that I am not ALONE in being "older and low-tech" (I occasionally torment myself with thoughts of wondering if I am the oldest and least tech-savvy fangirl EVAH).

*snags donut*

I just want things to work, you know? And not to have to be replaced every year or every other year. *sighs*

IKR!

Oh God, sympathy here. My brand spanking new laptop decided to go haywire on me a couple of weeks ago and I had to reinstalled Windows completely, and I still don't know what it was. But it was definitely an update that triggered it, I just don't know how. I don't know why they release things when they aren't ready to be released.

I now have 69 updates for Windows to install, and I'm too afraid to install them.

I hate that. You get something brand new and turn it on and it tells you to update it. And then half the time updates are fixing previous updates. Ugh. Just WORK. And the first time please.

I hope you figure out your laptop. Maybe google the problem or 'issues with windows updates' or something?

The problem with what I was having (Blue Screen of Death) was that it could be literally anything that's corrupted, so I tried every suggestion I could find, but none of it worked. Reinstalling was the only option, and thankfully it's fixed, but I'm afraid to download Firefox, as that was the most volatile trigger, and so I have to use Internet Explorer. :-(

What I'm doing is installing each update one and a time, so I know which one is the problem, if anything goes wrong. Hopefully, I'll be able to undo it.

Hopefully.

*keeps fingers crossed for you*

I am so very, very with you. Eurgh. Although I lost my cellphone this week and feel stranded without it. I'm terrified the vet will call, and I use it as a clock and alarm too. But iPads are The Next Big Thing in speech therapy, and I am dragging my heels every step of the way. *luddite high five*

*high fives back*

Ipads looks kind of neat but also seem like a cross between ipod touches and laptops but with aspects that make both annoying. I hope you find your phone!

Updating is such a...ugh, idk, usually it goes all well and fine and you have to adjust, but sometimes it just basically explodes in your face and now what???

And I am part of the computer generation.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly. 75% of the time updating is fine- either it improves the tech or you don't even notice a change. But then there's the other 25%.... *sigh*

Thank you! :)

Ugh. Sympathy. Did you manage to solve the problem eventually? (I would totally understand if you threw it in an icy pond!)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2014-02-02 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Eventually I did. I powered it off completely (usually ipod touches go into a standby sort of off state) then did the update again, then powered it off again and when I turned it back on it worked. Thankfully. :)
