The Waiting Game

Title: The Waiting Game
Pairing/Warning/Rating:
none, rated G
Word Count: 167
Summary: How Jack passes the time while waiting to come back to life
Author's Note: Discworld crossover

The explosion was massive.  Jack had been killed instantly, dead before his body even crashed through the wall.  His team, for the most part, seemed to have fared better.  Ianto was wrapping a blanket around Tosh, who, although slightly dazed, smiled in thanks.  Owen was bruised but busied himself treating Gwen.

Gwen, however, wasn’t moving.

“Are you here for her?”  Jack asked the figure behind him.

NO.  IT IS NOT HER TIME.

“Wasn’t mine either.  Well, not really.  But you still came for me.”

IT IS MY JOB.

“Well, given the damage, I figure we got a few hours to kill.  Did you bring cards this time?”

YES.

“Good.  But we’re not playing poker again.  You cheat.”

I DO NOT CHEAT.

“Then how do you explain the fact you always draw aces and eights?  Do you know how hard it is to beat that hand?”

THAT IS NOT MY CONCERN.

“It’s mine though.  And I say no poker.”

WE COULD PLAY CRIPPLE MR ONION.

“Fine.  You deal.”

hee! what's cripple mr. onion?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
No idea, it's the card game they play in Pratchett's books.

YAY. Brilliant. I like the moment of 'eep' when he wonders if it's Gwen Death is there for. And Your Death is fantastic. plus - Jack knows how to play Cripple Mr Onion! Whee!

(I have to write a fic with Jack in the city watch sometime)

Cripple Mr Onion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cripple_Mr_Onion). Legendary amongst Discworld fans.

geekgirl here actually looked up the rules to it! Death is a fun character to write for. Although, I wouldn't put it past him to cheat...

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
*Points to above comment* I looked 'em up too!

I wouldn't put it past him either. Wouldn't do for Death to lose against a human.

hahahaha or should that be HAHAHAHAHA. Or it is after the passing 'is it Gwen' moment. I love DEATH and him and Jack must be on at least cordial terms by now as they bump into each other so much. Love this *huggles*. I'm so glad that you're a crossover whore too *g*.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol! You did too! Death throws his game against Granny Weatherwax in one of the books I think... but I can believe that!

"Crossover whore"

Yep, I suppose that title fits now. Jack crossing over into Doctor Who, Due South, Stargate Atlantis, Discworld, Dresden Files.... *g*

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Um. I can't remember the exact details of his game with Granny. Was that in Witches Abroad? I certainly remember that Granny persuaded him to switch a child for a cow, somehow.

Going to have to find and re-read whatever book that is now.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's from Masquerade. Yep, some sort of cow/kid switch. But Granny's scary. I wouldn't want to make her mad!

Cute and funny...

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahha. Haven't read Maskerade in ages. And yeah, Granny is scary, but unbelievably awesome too. It's one of the reasons I slightly mistrust the Tiffany books. I don't want a little proto-Granny running around. The can be only one! Or something.

Wonderful! I'm working up to my 'Jack in Discworld' story at the moment, and this is a great reminder of how well it works.

Much enjoyed :)

*pootles off to find some Discworld icons*

Oh, that's just perfect! Of course Death cheats, and I love the idea of Death showing up for Jack every time and keeping him company.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I haven't read any of those

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
They're young adult books. And they're generally okay. Worth reading.

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh! I've got a Jack-in-Discworld story in mind, and it really does work. Can't wait to see yours!

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I've done it with short stories, and although Ianto meeting Igor was my favourite, I quite liked Jack and Susan - they spark each other off nicely. Once I find a macguffin for the plot, I'm hoping it'll be my [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang story. *crosses fingers* Looking forward to seeing yours! :)

[identity profile] crystalshard.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
*snicker* Lovely crossover. I like the way that Jack is so used to Death turning up, and how the team just leave Jack alone to get on with his resurrection.

I wonder what Jack's lifetimer would look like?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, my son's read the "johny and the bomb" series, but not those

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
thank you!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I hope you find the plot point you need for your discworld story!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
well, Death would get "Dead Man's Hand" each time he plays, right? :)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
hmmm, good question- a klein bottle maybe? Endlessly folding in on itself?
