The Waiting Game

Title: The Waiting Game
Pairing/Warning/Rating:
none, rated G
Word Count: 167
Summary: How Jack passes the time while waiting to come back to life
Author's Note: Discworld crossover

The explosion was massive.  Jack had been killed instantly, dead before his body even crashed through the wall.  His team, for the most part, seemed to have fared better.  Ianto was wrapping a blanket around Tosh, who, although slightly dazed, smiled in thanks.  Owen was bruised but busied himself treating Gwen.

Gwen, however, wasn’t moving.

“Are you here for her?”  Jack asked the figure behind him.

NO.  IT IS NOT HER TIME.

“Wasn’t mine either.  Well, not really.  But you still came for me.”

IT IS MY JOB.

“Well, given the damage, I figure we got a few hours to kill.  Did you bring cards this time?”

YES.

“Good.  But we’re not playing poker again.  You cheat.”

I DO NOT CHEAT.

“Then how do you explain the fact you always draw aces and eights?  Do you know how hard it is to beat that hand?”

THAT IS NOT MY CONCERN.

“It’s mine though.  And I say no poker.”

WE COULD PLAY CRIPPLE MR ONION.

“Fine.  You deal.”

*Points to above comment* I looked 'em up too!

I wouldn't put it past him either. Wouldn't do for Death to lose against a human.

Lol! You did too! Death throws his game against Granny Weatherwax in one of the books I think... but I can believe that!

Um. I can't remember the exact details of his game with Granny. Was that in Witches Abroad? I certainly remember that Granny persuaded him to switch a child for a cow, somehow.

Going to have to find and re-read whatever book that is now.

It's from Masquerade. Yep, some sort of cow/kid switch. But Granny's scary. I wouldn't want to make her mad!

Ahha. Haven't read Maskerade in ages. And yeah, Granny is scary, but unbelievably awesome too. It's one of the reasons I slightly mistrust the Tiffany books. I don't want a little proto-Granny running around. The can be only one! Or something.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I haven't read any of those

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
They're young adult books. And they're generally okay. Worth reading.

Oh, my son's read the "johny and the bomb" series, but not those

Most of his young adult books are fantastic. The Johnny Maxwell series is great, and I particularly love Truckers, Diggers, and Wings. The Amazing Maurice is good too, but the Tiffany ones fall a tiny bit short, for me.

So, I guess I shouldn't try to get my son started on them then. He's not a big reader. I was thrilled he was willing to read the Johnny series.

They might be a bit girly, if that's an issue, but the reason I'm wary of the Tiffany books is because I'm not entirely sure I like the direction in which they shift the Discworld series as a whole. I'm sure someone who isn't already a fan would have a much less biased view.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, I better stay away from them too then. I don't like shifting.

It's this whole new generation of characters thing he's doing. On the whole, I like it. But Tiffany is Granny, only shorter.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-12-31 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I dislike when they do that. Characters should have their own characterization, not be a carbon copy of someone else. (If that makes any sense)

*Nobody* messes with Granny; nobody informed that is. As for the uninformed, well, ignorance is no excuse.

and its certainly not a mistake a person will make more than once!
