Episode Reviews

Wow, I suck at getting these out.

Almost Human and Teen Wolf have ended. Almost Human never morphed into the show it could be and I don't know if it'll be renewed, I find that I don't care. Teen Wolf was great up until the last five second random event/cliffhanger which is something I dread, but oh well. I find myself at odds with the Teen Wolf fandom though because I just can't whip myself into a frothing rage over the main character death like everyone else is. Every time someone dies, it is just not a misogynistic horrible fridging event in my opinion.

Intelligence ends next week, technically the season finale, but I doubt it'll be renewed, so yet another show that could have/should have been more than it was. Still, strong heroic female characters in charge and bechdel test passing show was nice while it lasted.

The Blacklist needs help with how it writes its main female character. We're supposed to be engaged by her and care and whatnot but I do not in the slightest. Whoever is doing the lighting and makeup though deserves awards; the framing on Ressler combined with Diego Klattenhoff's acting has been amazing.

TPTB behind SHIELD are really pissing me off because they claim that this coming week's ep leads into Captain America 2 and then the week after's will have spoilers for the movie which... really? I don't see movies opening weekend, I don't like feeling manipulated into doing it either. I just feel that they have no idea what it takes to make a good show or why their show is failing to be a hit in the ratings (I assume it has something to do with the unengaging characters, pathetic plots, sloppy writing and mediocre acting but that's just me.) Their supposed Thor:TDW tie in episode didn't really tie in at all and I watched it and the Sif one without having seen the movie, but I didn't care about Thor as much as I do about Cap2 so mostly I'm just left annoyed by this recent announcement and it's encouraging me to quit watching the show.

There are other shows I watch and would be happy to blither about with people, but they're all kind of just... there and I can't come up with much to comment about them.

Actually, having seen Cap 2, I don't think there's any other way to go re: the spoilers. Unless they just skipped that week and didn't air an episode at all, or moved the action somewhere completely cut off from everything. The repercussions of what happens in the movie would be impossible to ignore.

I assume SHIELD goes kerbloowy/evil or something since that's what the commercials seem to show and that Nick gets hurt badly (please don't let me know specifics). Which, yes, they could certainly deal with on the show, but many episodes have the team in their own little bubble, and there's very little (if any) interaction between them and SHIELD command shown. I just think it's not the best tactic to have an episode tying into a movie that may not be available where folks who are watching the show are due to whatever reason (small town not showing it, people unable to go, etc) especially if it's for something major in the movie that'll have less of an impact if spoiled by however the show choses to do it.

I don't want to spoil you, so I won't go into specifics, but sadly, that bubble of theirs is probably not sustainable in the aftermath. I'd probably schedule 2-3 weeks for it to be off air rather than do a tie-in immediately, because as long as the show and the movie happen in the same universe, the first post-movie episode would *have to* spoil parts of the movie.

Unless they went to Asgard. For reasons. That would be a cool way to air the episode the opening week and not spoil anything.

Yeah, a break in April wouldn't be unusual, a lot of shows do that pre-May sweeps, at least on week anyway would seem reasonable. Oh well.

I think the frothing rage over TW and Allison's death isn't about a one time thing. If the minority and female character deaths was just a one time thing, people probably wouldn't be upset. I know I wouldn't be...at least not about that aspect of it.

I think just like 3A, SB started well and than started to be more than a little lackluster.

Yeah, I get that, but it's somewhat comparing apples and oranges, and with the final episode they have killed off a white guy and now there's one less dead woman.... I don't know, I think they gave her a heroic send off which was kind of nice.

Killing off Aiden was long overdue. It goes a long way toward making up for the other issues, but it doesn't erase the issues.

For me, I don't care so much about heroic deaths, especially if the death was unnecessary.

i think part of the problem with almost human was that fox showed it out of order, which made the continuity (such as it was) much choppier than it would've been otherwise. not that i necessarily think it would've been an amazing show if fox had run the episodes in the order they were intended, but i think it might have hung together better. karl urban and michael ealy did have some really nice buddy chemistry, tho.

i totally agree with you about the blacklist. i watch for reddington and ressler, and i like the tech guy, but elizabeth? eh. she's not that compelling. (and i don't particularly care about her husband either.) which is a bummer since the show is ostensibly about her.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2014-03-28 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I heard something about the episodes being out of order, which really would explain a lot of the choppiness. *sigh* There definitely was some nice chemistry there. I feel back for Michael Ealy because "Common Law" should have been a great buddy cop show too and it just didn't quite make it either.

I could care less about Tom Keen or the great mystery surrounding him, and Elizabeth just falls flat. Some of her actions just are moronic or are so questionable. Ressler though.... god the scenes he had with Red in the box? And then by the snowy river in last week's episode? Amazing stuff.

Oh man, that blows. Like, fair play to the earlier comments of the movie having big repercussions on the 'verse, but I would be so pissed if I watched that show. I don't see movies in theatres any more, period. I can't. My migraines won't let me. And I've owned the second Thor movie for a few days now, and I haven't found a chance to see it yet, and that's months after the theatre release. I understand that they are limited by the setting in which they find themselves, but give people a chance. You could set the episodes before the events, and then time skip to an aftermath when things have settled down a bit.

I don't watch SHIELD anymore, but I'd be pissed.

I don't watch much telly anymore, though. I watch Once Upon a Time, and whatever is on Masterpiece, and Call the Midwife when it's airing, but that's really it in a week. The rest of the time I'm on youtube or watching a movie. I find telly very slim pickings of late.

I tend to shy away from movies in theaters for similar reasons- too loud, too overwhelming and too much *TOO* But if I really, really want to see the movie I'll try to find an off-hour time to go when it'll be less crowded and cheaper and try to manage. It's rare I am that interested in a movie, but Cap2 is one of the few I'd like to try to see in theaters. Still though, being told I HAVE to see it within the first four days of it being release? No. No way.

It just seems like there should be some way around it, especially since you'd assume the plan is to sell the show around to other markets and it's not like the movie will match up with the show airing in the UK (or where ever) in another year.

I'd been trying to give Agents of SHIELD the benefit of the doubt and to keep watching, but not if it's going to outright spoil me for a movie I'm really looking forward to. Yes, I'm sure the internet will spoil me somewhat, it's pretty impossible to have an online presence at all and stay unspoiled, but I'm going to at least try.

I actually watch a lot of TV, I'm just not fannish about most of it, unfortunately.

Oh, and we just saw Thor 2 a few days ago here, we really liked it.

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2014-03-28 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I used to go to the movies all the time, but the past few years I've been dealing with headaches that make me very dizzy, so I don't like to spend all that money on something I might not make it to the end of.

And even getting in to a movie like Cap2 on the first few days of release is hard. I remember trying to get into Mamma Mia! a few weeks after release and it took me three goes to find a showing that wasn't sold out.

I watch a lot of British telly, but American telly isn't doing it for me these days. A bit too grim for my tastes. I like lighter, happier fare.

I'm planning on watching Thor 2 soon, I just need to find a nice chunk of time. Superhero movies are getting long these days.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2014-03-28 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I hadn't even thought about the whole sold out aspect of the movies. Wow, that makes them showing a spoilery episode so soon after that much more inconsiderate.
