Dying To Be A Hero

Title: Dying To Be A Hero
Pairing/Warning/Rating: none, rated G
Word Count: 255
Summary:  Owen and Ianto debate over Jack's dead body.

“We shouldn’t have let him do it, Owen.  We could have found another way.”

“Don’t be stupid, Ianto.  Jack’s plan worked, didn’t it?  The Trolaxian beast is dead.”

“But so is Jack!”

“Well, lucky for him it’s not permanent, eh?”

“Owen!”

“Relax, he’ll be fine.  Just help me get these talons out of his chest.”

“We can’t keep expecting him to do this!  How many times has he died for us?  How can we keep letting him?”

“Well, it’s not like we’ll be able to get him to stop any time soon.  It’s his job.  He saves the Earth.  He protects us.  That’s what he does.  It’s who he is.”

“It’s not who he is, it’s who he thinks he has to be.”

“Same difference.”

“No, it’s not.  He shouldn’t have to throw himself in front of a hail of bullets without a moment’s hesitation in order to protect people, to protect us.  He never even tried to find another way this time.”

“Talons.  Not bullets.”

“The result’s the same.”

“Yeah, I guess it is.”

“But, we’re a team.  We can save the world together.  We can protect each other.  We should.  How do we get him to understand he doesn’t have to die to be a hero?”

“I don’t know if we can.”

“But we should try, we have to try.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right.  But before you can lecture him, he’s gotta be alive so are you going to help me get this talon out his chest or not?”

“I’ll get the crowbar."

That's wonderful!!

thank you!

Disturbing, loving, emotional and snarky all in one. Nice combo. Very nicely done. I enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing!

sorry about the disturbing part, but glad you liked the rest!

Both disturbing and cute. I love it.

[identity profile] badwolf36.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Oh it was disturbing in a good way. (Not like you're going to get used to your boss being dead on a regular occasion).

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I supposed most people don't get that opportunity...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
thanks! :)

[identity profile] crystalshard.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
*snicker* Great voices for both of them. I love Ianto's last line.

[identity profile] eumenidis.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
...A crowbar? Just how big *was* this critter?

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
Love it
BUT

ewwww A crowbar???

That's fantastic! Really, really painful - the idea that Jack feels he has to keep dying to be a hero - and yet somehow at the same time lighthearted and with a killer last line. Wow! :-)

[identity profile] phantomreviewer.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems so much like a real episode, snarky but also realistic

[identity profile] secbeth.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Ianto is so logical and Owen snarky... Fabulous humor

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad you liked it! *g*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Big enough Jack chose to kill it rather than flirt with it?

[identity profile] riftugee.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Crowbar! *snerk*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
errr... sorry? My mind blanked on what else to use.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
thank you! That's exactly what I was going for, but I guess I went a little too far with the crowbar line

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
thank you! :)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Snarky Owen can be so fun! Glad you liked it

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

[identity profile] itsarift-thing.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
No don't apologise it was good

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
*grin* I love the tone of this - kind of worried, kind of annoyed, totally practical. And the ending made me grin waaay too much :)

Much enjoyed, thanks.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, okay *phew* I was wondering if I'd gone too far

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Thank you!

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
How do we get him to understand he doesn’t have to die to be a hero?”

Where our present Jack is concerned that's probably an eternal question. I love the whole thing, but the dialogue from that point ^ is brilliant. Except for maybe the bit about the crowbar which made me laugh and go ouch at the same time (ans so is brilliant in a different way).

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, I think I pushed it a bit with the crowbar line. I just wanted something that would be so odd to have become ordinary for them. glad you liked it

[identity profile] eumenidis.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I...see. Your basic King Kong meets Fay Wray situation, then.

[identity profile] darthhellokitty.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
What unfeathered said - and I *like* the crowbar!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
*phew* thanks! :)

[identity profile] invisible-lift.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
“I’ll get the crowbar."

*blink*

Okay. Now, That's some serious talon.

[personal profile] jo02 2008-01-04 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah - very good message here - do you think they'll be able to get it through Jack's thick skull though?

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
that is so spot on. I actually wish they'd put something like this in the show. when will you learn, Jack?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love to see something like this in canon (not the joke, but the fact Jack sacrifices himself over and over for others) but I somehow doubt it, canonically speaking, the TW team is far too self-centered to think that way

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt it, would be nice though! :)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
talons can be very scary

[identity profile] invisible-lift.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do the chickens have huge talons?"

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
This all says a lot of truth about Jack - very nice! I think this bit of the exchange actually says as much if not more about Owen -

“It’s not who he is, it’s who he thinks he has to be.”

“Same difference.”

- that Owen believes who you think you have to be is the same thing as who you are - he knows masks, too, which makes me a little sad for him.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-05 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just my interpretation, but I think that Owen sees things that way- that other's actions make who they are (thus the derisive way he treated Ianto- whom he considers just a tea-boy)

[identity profile] k-haldane.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry to come in late on the conversation, but I couldn't let this line go without laughing...

Big enough Jack chose to kill it rather than flirt with it

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
You're never too late to join in with the laughter! :)
