August 2014 ficlist etc

Only three fics posted to my LJ but I've the [community profile] fic_promptly challenge week fills to post still:

The Rising Night- In the Flesh, spoilers for both seasons, Jem supposed that it made sense that her relationship with her brother had changed, but she didn't have to like it, rated G, 338 words ([livejournal.com profile] fan_flashworks)
Vision of Similitude- Vikings, Ragnar may never truly understand Athelstan, but he will certainly appreciate him, rated R, 100 words
Inner Enemy- Magnificent Seven, The hardest hatred to face is one's own, rated PG, 697 words

1 drabble, 2 ficlets, 3 fics for 1135 words.

This month I watched:
all 9 episodes In the Flesh (*cough*), a really interesting non-apocalyptic partial zombie British show with canon gay characters and a lot of social commentary- definitely worth watching
Some of The Almighty Johnsons (currently airing S1 on SYFY, 3 seasons/37 eps aired in NZ), a comedy/drama about a NZ set of brothers who are (sort of) Norse gods reincarnated. Cute overall, I'll probably try to watch the rest.
a few episodes of Vikings, which was far too violent with too much sex for my tastes
a good chunk of Graceland (*cough*) which is currently airing its second season on USA. It's a show about undercover agents of various US agencies who share a house. It's typical USA fare with a bit more sex and violence than usual but not overly so. It's... alright. Ish. Not sure I'll catch up completely or purposely watch all the eps.
and Dominion (*cough*), which was fascinating world building of what happens if angels (very different from SPN's angels) decide to take out humanity and take over the world. Only 8 episodes in the first season, lots of familiar faces, actors-wise, twists and turns in the plot that I didn't expect... I liked it a lot and hope it gets renewed.
Also, I watched/am watching S3 and S4 and S5 (as it airs) of The Great British Bake Off, a really nice baking competition from the UK.
and Legends, a tv show starring Sean Bean as an undercover agent who sometimes gets lost in the legend (fake, created persona) he uses when working. Decent so far, but may or may not work in the long run.

New shows start soon and old ones return too, so it'll be a nice and fannish time soonish!

How's my flist? Into anything interesting?

I've seen Season Two of the Almighty Johnsons, but not seasons one or three. I loved what I saw, though. I thought it was very clever, and I loved the blend of Norse god stuff with modern stuff. Plus, some interesting Maori stuff, too. I don't know if Space ever aired the third season here. I sort of stopped watching a lot of stuff and now I'm so behind, I don't know if I can catch up.

How violent is Legend? I am a big Sean Bean fan (BOROMIR! SHARPE!), but I have been having trouble with violence and dark stuff lately.

What did you make of the Great Baked Alaska Scandal on The Great British Bake-Off? I don't watch, but I read an article on Buzzfeed today and was very indignant for something I know nothing about.

The scandal was nothing, if you watch carefully you can tell it's the way the camera work was done to make something from nothing. For some reason Iain put his ice cream in the freezer Diane and someone else shared, even though there wasn't room for it there. It was a HOT day and everything was melting and when Diane needed to set something she took his out for less than a minute while moving stuff about. (this was confirmed by Sue Perkins- it sat out for 40 sec). Iain LOST IT and just let his temper get the better of himself and tossed his ice cream and everything else for the bake in the trash and stormed off. After he calmed down he realized he overreacted.

Legends is a little violent, but nowhere as bad as many things on today. There is some blood and beatings though and people do die. So far I watch it, but am not in love with it, if that makes sense, I'd be sad if it were canceled but would move on quickly.

As for Almighty Johnsons, I do like how it blended in the Maori stuff too, although I haven't seen much of S2.

That's the part I didn't get. Even if it fails, present something. I watched The Next Great Baker and someone's cake never finished baking. They presented the batter. You can't expect to plead your case if you're acting like a child.

There's a lot more Maori stuff as the season goes on, if I recall correctly.

Yeah, he realized his mistake eventually, but he should have kept his sponge and merienge (how ever you spell it) and presented that. In a previous year someone's little cakes fell and two splatted and instead of having the 6 they were supposed to present they had 4 good ones and two half baked because it hadn't had enough time to make up for the destroyed ones and the judges were pretty cool about it.

I'm not sure what the prize for the Great British Bake-Off is, but if you're trying to be employed somewhere or get noticed even, you need to show how you react when something goes wrong. On The Next Great Baker, they've even had episodes where they make a cake that gets destroyed and have to rebuild it again (which I hate, because wasting food like that is sickening, but I do understand the methodology). It's not so much 'did you make a perfect cake' as 'did do everything you could to salvage this situation and try to make something to give to your paying client'.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2014-09-02 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Near as I can tell the prize is a YAY you won and a little trophy or something- no money, no job, nothing like that. I think Iain might have done okay if he hadn't had the loss of temper.

There was one ep where someone sliced themselves pretty good and had to withdraw for the day to go to the ER and the judges didn't pull anyone for the day and they got rid of two bakers the next week.

So, basically if he hadn't acted like a prat, there was a good chance he would have had some sympathy shown to him. Sounds like real life!

Yep, very likely!! :)
