I try to go on after Mary passes, truly I do.
Originally, I manage to blunder through by rote alone, but without her steady presence by my side, tethering me to the world, I find myself incapable of putting forth the effort to continue the pointless charade.
No-one needs a soldier unable to serve; a doctor lacking the drive to heal; a husband without a spouse; a boswell without someone to chronicle.
Putting my affairs in order is a simple task, as is obtaining the poison.
I may be lunching alone, but I shall dine with Mary and Sherlock tonight.

(And though you meant it or not, that last line got me thinking about Holmes and his reaction when he finds out and that's just killing me too.)
