TW 2.03 Our little Owen is growing up
There were some plot holes and issues I had with the story:
Tosh’s being in love with Tommy didn’t feel quite natural, but it was necessary for the plot. They were cute together, but their extreme attraction felt a bit forced. The circular logic behind Tommy having to be the one to save the day in that certain way seems a bit like one of those vicious cycles that are hard to get into (Tommy had to have already been taken by Torchwood in order to have given the message for him to be taken)
There were some moments I wanted to bang my head against the wall:
Gwen *sigh* first she tries to open sealed orders after being told they were sealed and is surprised they don’t open? There had to be a better way of setting up the temporal lock explanation. And I’ll admit the wounded soldier approaching Gwen was scary.. But girl, there’s a hall behind you? Why did you bump into the wall and stop? And why not call Jack (or the others) right away? Also, she was terribly slow on the uptake with the ghost nurse
And some things I liked:
good effects- I liked the sound effect of Tommy’s heart beat during the time he was waking up- frenetic and fast during the struggle, then slowing and stead as he recognizes Tosh and where he is. Also the effect of the timeseal breaking was very cool, as was the effect of using the key.
Owen’s being written wonderfully- He was all big brother and protective to Tosh, which was very sweet, and he saves the day with a spur of the minute plan! And his going after Tosh to make sure she’s okay was also a nice change in character for him.
random bits I found interesting:
I liked the way Gwen and Ianto were looking at the 1918 TW team pictures- Gwen: “so young." Ianto: “They all were, nothing changes” ... mirrors for TW1 and Canary Warf and Suzie and all.
We now know Tosh has worked at TW3 for 4 years give or take.... (any idea where “Aliens of London” falls into this timeline? Before or after the 4 years?)
Good song choice for the ghost in the wheelchair to be singing- "tick tock I wind up the clock and start my day over again...."
They no longer use phones to contact the hub. Instead they were using some sort of radio thing.
I do wonder why Torchwood didn’t keep track of the hospital after it was abandoned.
And a historical wince at learning of the harsh treatment of shellshocked soldiers. I had no idea!
Ianto is still the teaboy- notice how Tosh looks at him for the cup of tea that Tommy requests?
Since I’m sure everyone will mention it, so will I... “The Kiss”
Ianto- “... Would you go back to yours [Jack’s time], if you could?”
Jack- “Why, would you miss me?” (Jokingly)
I- Yep (So certain!)
J- I left home a long time ago, I don’t really know where I really belonged, maybe that doesn’t matter anymore.
I- I know you get lonely.
J-Going home wouldn’t fix that. Being here I’ve seen things I’d never dreamt I’d see, loved people I’d never have known if I’d just stayed where I was.... and I wouldn’t change that for the world.
Cute dialogue, and I have to say I’m a little surprised Ianto was the one who made the first move and kissed Jack, not the other way around.
Overall, a pretty good episode. It was enjoyable and the plot holes are fairly minor overall.
