Yuletide Reveals!
I'm going to try to do more than just a list this year, we'll see how it works.
I nominated The Losers because I wanted to write it and loved reading it even though I wasn't going to request it since I received it last year and it turned out to be a good thing I did since no one else nommed it (or they happened to nom the exact same characters I did, which is unlikely). As soon as letters started posting I began bookmarking the ones I hoped to get assigned to write. I did get assigned Losers, but they didn't have a letter (or any real optional details) but I kept the bookmarks because TREATS.
My assignment was for redleather, who only asked for Cougar/Jensen without any prompt (*sigh*) but assignments went out so early (October 10th!) that I fished my first draft with still tons and tons of time to write so I went looking for other prompts.
That's when I spotted Hopefulnebula's Jake 2.0 prompt, which I remembered seeing for a few years now. I loved Jake 2.0 when it aired (a show where an IT guy at the NSA accidentally gets infected with nanobots and gets superpowers as a result). I'd never written it, but decided to rewatch a few eps to see if I could come up with anything and that's when I remember how great the interplay was between Jake and Kyle and hopefully did it justice in my story.
I already knew I want to try to write for Agent X because it had the most ridiculous premise ever (a secret passage in the constitution that gives the VP a secret agent of their own to use as needed by the nation) but was still a blast to watch and, of course, was cancelled pretty quickly. I had a lot of fun with Fram's prompt and had to try really hard not to give anything away when I was in the middle of helping her work on her assignment when she noticed she had a gift fic and commented how she wasn't going to shake it so she didn't know which fandom it'd be in, but knew it wouldn't be Agent X since it was too rare. :D
I decided to do another Losers fic after that because meh_guh's prompt about Jensen hacking/coding in his only his boxers had been noodling in my brain for ages and once I finished that (which had to be short and sweet and a madness treat, it just didn't want to be a full length one) I went straight to work on Minim Calibre's Losers prompt of accidental baby acquisition because Jensen+babies=awesome right?
Taking a break from Losers, I then perused the Great Mouse Detective prompts; I have such a soft spot for that movie. Cookinguptales asked for a bunch of great stuff- h/c, casefic, fluff, etc and I had a lot of fun working several of their requests into a story.
I've been rather taken with Timeless this year, despite its rather, shall we say, lackadaisical treatment of altering history so I went looking for requests for it and laughed when I saw slipshod's request (that they wanted to 'ship everyone with everyone and yell at Wyatt for being a bonehead') and knew I had to write it. I didn't *quite* have everyone yell at Wyatt for being a bonehead, but it was close. :)
And then the Christmas episode of Lethal Weapon aired. OH MY HEART. The found family aspect of that show and Riggs' heartache combined to just BREAK ME. Thankfully shelfics [jedi_penguin] felt similarly and I was able to channel all my feels into a story for them.
I made an attempt to get AnarchyAnagrams's pinchhit around then when I saw their Losers prompt; I didn't reply quickly enough, but I decided write it anyway (because Jensen, pre-relationship? Yes, please!). I'd also wanted to try writing for an unreliable narrator for a while so took the opportunity to do so here, I think it worked well for Jensen to come to realize his feelings that way. After I posted it though, I realized that there were now four Losers fics between the two collections and I'd written them all. Oops. (And also surprising since in previous years there had always been 10-12 Losers fics written, I have no idea why this year there were so few.)
Figuring I should stay away from writing more Losers as a result, I looked for some other fandoms to try to treat and came across a Damien prompt that would make a good drabble (I'd been kind of annoyed with myself for not managing any drabbles last year) for Skitz_phenom (touchofstrange) and then a Lucifer prompt from templemarker asking for Lucifer and Trixie interacting that I thought could be cute so I took a stab at that too.
I then remembered about Houdini & Doyle, a show I loved (and posted about several times) which, of course, also got cancelled. I'd offered to write it in my signup and had really wanted to so I went looking and was so happy to see that seren_ccd not only requested it, but wanted all three characters! I started perusing the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London's pictures (which are awesome, go check them out) and came across the photo of Queen Anne's Gate taken in 1886, just 15 years before the show's setting and some research led to me realizing it would be PERFECT for our heroes to investigate; it's even rumored to be haunted so I wouldn't even have to make up a supernatural teaser to involve the three of them!
I had been going through the requests alphabetically by fandom then and came across APgeeksout's request for the Behind You webcomic (a series of single panel comics all with the idea of something scary being behind the main character, posted at http://thehairsonthebackofyourneck.tumblr.com). Now, APgeeksout's name stood out because they'd treated me when I was a Pinch Hitter for NPT one year and had also been my assigned YT writer one year and not only wrote one of my favorite stories, but they also treated me with a drabble based off one of my own fics so I was more than happy to see they were interested in a trope inversion for Behind You since a) I thought I could do that and b) awesome people like them deserve ALL THE TREATS. I'd remembered seeing this panel, where a girl was in a desolate alley and a ghostly figure was staring menacingly down at her and had a lot of fun turning it on its head.
The Pinch Hit writers post went up around then so I perused the prompts to see if I could treat any of them and, oops, another Losers request caught my eye, this time for Laynon who asked for Cougar and Jensen and how they get together and how could I resist writing that? Oops. At least another Losers fic got posted to the collection by the time this one was done? (I also had a lot of fun working soccer/football terms and allegories into the fic, which I hope they liked.)
Another PHer request was for The Librarians, a show I watch but hadn't written in, but Bette asked for Jones and Stone snark with a side of Jenkins and those are my favorite characters so I thought I'd give it a try. (I could not come up with a good summary for this fic, unfortunately. I eventually settled on something, but I still don't think it's all that great.)
I also really loved Llwyden's The Addams Family goes to Disneyland prompt. I knew I didn't have it in me to write a full length treat about it, but I had some fun with an all dialog drabble for it.
Early on, I'd remembered seeing someone in FFA mention they'd nommed Second Chance (a show I loved, and of course was cancelled) and I kept going back to the prompt by Liviania that had caught my eye, trying to write it, but mostly failing. :( I kept at it though and eventually managed a drabble. I still wish I could have written something longer because the show and the characters deserved more. Oh well.
Humorously, I posted those last two drabbles on the same day and despite being 100 words in Word, AO3 considered them 99 and 101 words long so I had to futz around with them, but I thought it funny they still averaged 100 words long. :)
Overall, I'm really happy with how Yuletide turned out this year. I got an awesome fic (Longstreet/Nero Wolfe crossover!!! Woot!) and wrote just over 26k worth of stories and most of the recips commented and seemed to really like their fics so success all around!! :)
