Yuletide Reveals!!!
So... as typical I wrote a lot for Yuletide. Technically I also wrote a little non-YT during Yuletide because I wrote a drabble to help get a fandom wrangled so I'm going to include that here. Since the vast majority of the fics were in incredibly tiny (but GOOD) fandoms I'm also going to promote each fandom in this post as well. Onto the fic!! (Starting with fandoms people might have heard of.)
Wonder Woman: This movie probably doesn't need any promoting. :D
Faded Blooms of Memory, rated G, 1,756 words. Summary: It is said that the memories of one's past helped shape their present. Sometimes Diana wondered how accurate her own memories were. (A treat for samalander.)
The Good Place: This show also probably doesn't need promoting? It's about a group of people in the afterlife where things are more complicated than they might seem.
Soulmate, Shmolmate?, rated G, 1194 words. Summary: Okay, minor problem, Eleanor was in the Good Place by mistake. That she could deal with. The fact she a) had a soulmate and b) her soulmate was drop dead gorgeous? That was going to be a little harder to get used to. (This treat for orangesandlemons was betaed by Angelsaves and has s2e3 spoilers)
Lethal Weapon: I've posted about this Mel Gibson/Danny Glover buddy cop movie series that was rebooted last year into an amazingly inclusive show before. Clayne Crawford as Martin Riggs is beautifully broken and Damon Wayans as Roger Murtaugh is a wonderfully exasperated family man who keeps dragging his reluctant partner back into the world of the living.
The World's Orbit, Realigning, rated PG, 3294 words. Summary: An incident from the past helps Riggs realize how he should deal with the present. (Written for EmmaDeMarais {before the airing of s2e5 so diverges slightly from canon.})
Inching Closer to Center, rated G, 2,723 words. Summary: Riggs wasn't sure how or when it happened, but he seemed to have found a place in the Murtaugh family. (A treat for Ultra.)
Killjoys: I've posted about this many times before as well. Bounty Hunters in space with canon f/f, m/m, with both diverse and disabled characters and characters. Overall, an amazing show.
Weft to Weave, rated G, 1506 words. Summary: Dutch has never had problems talking to Johnny. Recording a message for him however? That was an entirely different matter. (AKA the five messages Dutch deleted and the one she finally sent.) (A treat for lady_ragnell)
A Hard Day's Work, rated PG, 100 words. Summary: Pree should be working, but Gared is rather distracting. (A treat for Brenda.)
Frequency: Some of you might remember this 2000 movie, staring Dennis Quaid (Frank), Jim Caviezel (John) and Andre Braugher (Satch), about how a ham radio and the aurora borealis enabled a man in 1998 to talk to his father in 1969 and the various twists and turns that happen after saving his life.
Is As It Was and May Yet Be, rated G, 2940 words. Summary: There was a future where John's life was threatened. Frank knew this, he'd heard it clear as day. All he had to do is figure out how to prevent it without changing it too much or he'd change the past too. All. He knew it wasn't going to be easy, but what choice did he have? (A treat for cyren2132, betaed by Karios.)
Midnight, Texas: I think I posted about this TV show about a small town with some unusual residents (like vampires, witches, psychics, etc) once or twice.
Lingering Darkness and the Reluctant Fighter, rated G, 1663 words. Summary: Manfred was coming apart at the seams and somehow Olivia was the only one who noticed. (A treat for Chosenfire.)
Dinner for One: A few of you might be familiar with this 15 minute sketch comedy, also known as "Der 90. Geburtstag" or "The 90th Birthday", where it's Miss Sophie's birthday but her butler, James, must fill in for all her guests and gets drunker and drunker as the evening progresses. If not, it is a complete delight and you should go watch it here.
Die gleiche Prozedur | Hangover for One , rated G, 1395 words. James must train his replacement on certain procedures that are to be followed every year regarding Miss Sophie's birthday celebration. (A treat for ijemanja.)
Roundtable Rival is an incredible music video by Lindsey Stirling (found here) where people fight each other with music instruments and is set in the Wild West.
The Mellifluous, the Cacophonous, rated G, 1147 words. Summary: There was a time when their musical abilities blended into seamless duets. Times have changed. (A treat for Prinzenhasserin.)
And now the fandoms I'm sure no one has even heard of......
Suradanna and the Sea: a short story by Rebecca Fraimow (available to read here) described by the author (
skygiants) as a story that "features trade routes, magical fertilizer, and one girl's centuries-long effort to impress a woman who is already in a committed relationship with a boat."
The Eddies of Time, Circling, rated PG, 100 words. Summary: Thankfully, no matter how much has changed, some things are still familiar. (Written for wrangling purposes.)
And I Awoke and Found Me Here on the Cold Hill's Side a short story by James Tiptree Jr (available to read here) The story is basically about humans coming into contact with aliens, and becoming obsessed with them, to the point perhaps humanity's very existence might be threatened by their glamour.
In the Gloam, rated G, 1179 words. Summary: Those known as the Oomans might be gone, but their things, and interest in them, remains. (A treat for Sath. Like the original work the title is from La Belle Dame Sans Merci by John Keats. I may also have gone a little nuts with coding footnotes in this fic- I'm not apologizing though, they were fun and added to the story.)
Down in the Library Basement: a short story by Rona Vaselaar | sleepyhollow_101. Originally posted as a series on the No Sleep subreddit (part 1, part 2, part 3) while technically a horror story, it is also a story about libraries and unusual patrons that sometimes find themselves protecting them. I spotted this story mentioned either in the fandom promoting post or the list of short stories and read it on a whim and found it just a wonderful combination of slightly creepy and wonderfully quaint, with nice amounts of small town MN and insider library tidbits mixed in.
Finally Winning Out, rated G, 2509 words. Summary: There are a lot of libraries out there in the world. Cassie isn't even remotely surprised to find out others are as interestingly occupied as hers. (A treat for escritoireazul. I had a lot of fun slipping various bit of trivia, MN, and library details in to this.)
Street Justice: This action tv show starred Carl Weathers as Adam Beaudreaux and Bryan Genesse as Grady Jameson. The set up of the show was that Adam (formerly a soldier, now police detective) had been searching for Grady for the past 20 years after the recently orphaned 8 yr old Grady had saved Adam's life when he'd been wounded in Vietnam and they had just found each other again. Grady, now grown, is a marital arts instructor and sometimes teams up with Adam to solve cases. (Typed out like that, the premise sounds ridiculous, but I loved the show when it aired and was excited to see it in the tagset and then requested by a pinch hitter. Why is it not streaming anywhere? WHY?)
Having Sought and Found, rated G, 3111 words. Summary: When Grady is injured some admissions come to light. (A treat for james, betaed by rosefox.)
16 Ways to Kill a Vampire at McDonalds (Interactive Fiction/Video Game) A fun, quick to play game where you're a vampire hunter on your night off who was just going to get a bite to eat but stumbles upon a vampire in the McDonalds and if you don't do something, then in one hour it will eat the cute cashier. Play the game here.
Not Quite 16 Ways to (Maybe) Become a Vampire Hunter, rated G, 1400 words (a drabble sequence). Summary: There are many ways one might become a vampire hunter. (A treat for Eida, betaed by werewolfinatophat.)
And, last but in no way least...
Peacemakers: This Old West-meets-CSI show unfortunately aired for only 9 episodes in 2003. It starred Tom Berenger as Civil War veteran/US Marshall Jared Stone, Peter O'Meara as Scotland Yard trained, former Pinkerton detective Larimer Finch and Amy Carlson as Katie Owen who'd been in medical school before having to drop out to run her family's mortuary and now assists Stone and Finch as a sort of forensic pathologist. It was great because while it set up a little bit of a culture clash between Stone and his 'old fashion leg work' ways and Finch's 'modern technological and scientific' ways there was always respect and acceptance between the two. All nine episodes of the show are streaming legally in the US on yahoo view here and everyone should go watch it.
The Uncertain Dawn, rated G, 11149 words. Summary: Badly injured, Finch collapses outside of Katie's place, sparking the investigation into how he got there and what happened to him. (Written for Settiai, who had been requesting this fandom for about a decade. I finally had the time to research it properly and was thrilled to have a chance to write it for them. Research notes wise, did you know there are tons of really old cookbooks online? I was able to make use of two desserts in the 1865 cookbook Mrs. Goodfellow's Cookery as It Should Be.: a New Manual of the Dining Room and Kitchen that I found. So, anyway, a lot of research {seriously, could the show have been any less consistent with its setting or canon?} and word wars later I had an 11k h/c casefic which I begged werewolfinatophat to beta and thus the longest thing I ever wrote for Yuletide {by far} came to be.)
(There is also my not-really-a-fandom, joke entry to add to this list... for Numbers (Anthropomorphic) 01000010 01101001 01101110 01100001 01110010 01111001 00100000 01000110 01101001 01100011 aka Binary Fic aka donutsweeper should not be allowed to play with text conversion websites)
