Episode review 2.07 or I tried hard not to laugh

This was supposed to be a dramatic episode, but it failed miserably on that front for me.

The hopefully unintentionally funny bits:  Jack's glove-gasm when trying to activate it, the visit from The Addam's Family's The Thing, and the 90's steady-cam MTV video knock off feel in the bar scene.

The "look Torchwood has money and can so special effects whether they are necessary or not" bits:  Owen vomiting up the beer (with also ranked in the 'things I never wanted to see on TV' category), Owen vomiting up Death (which made me wonder what TW's obsession with vomiting effects is this season- we saw it in 2.06 too),  the overuse of Death wandering the halls and the fight that would-not-end between Death and Owen.

Let's add in the "Huh?" scenes:  What happened between Death being released and Jack waking up in the SUV?  Did that feel like a scene was cut to anyone else?  And, why did Martha de-age?  Don't get me wrong, I'm glad she did, but WHY?  The people who had the life sucked out of them by Death didn't come back, why did Martha?

There were some good bits- I loved the look into Cardiff's supernatural/seedy underworld, and that while Jack isn't a regular visitor there he's obviously not unknown.  I also adored the scene in the jail cell between Jack and Owen  (after the puking bit got out of the way).

Question- does anyone know of a place where it lists who wrote which episode for S1 and S2?  Just episode titles and writers, not summaries though.  NM- thanks, [personal profile] mad_jaks!

I'll probably add more to this after I've had a chance to think about it some more, if I can get around the disappointment factor.

Wiki is your friend (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Torchwood_episodes)

I fell asleep before the repeat of last night's BBC2 repeat of Reset and so later on I Seriously thought I had nodded off when Jack suddenly woke up in the SUV for no apparent reason... :s

excellent! You rock, thanks so much! No idea why I didn't think of looking there (oh, right- because reading the DW companion page had HUGE spoilers for S4)

I'm glad I wasn't the only one confused by that

Well I'm glad you mentioned it because my son and his gf were dozing on the other sofa so I really believed I *had* until you said. Yours being the first mention of it I have come across today.

(I am not officially here you understand we are having a tea break and I am getting hubby off to work and then son and I are recommencing our Warhammer battle :O)

I was with you all the way on the glove bit, but otherwise enjoyed it reasonably well. It did feel a bit like a S1 episode though - nice idea, brilliant idea in fact, shame about the execution.

I'd assumed that Death had killed Jack, so the others kind of dumped him in the SUV and waited for him to wake up. But yes, there were whole chunks missing in this. My fingers are twitching...

Like you, I thought Jack and Owen were brilliant together - JB does his best work bouncing off the others. I thought he was less good alone. Oh, and I am now adopting glove-gasm into my personal vocabulary. ;)

I am so sorry :)

I actually screeched with laughter at Thing's big brother in armour and on steroids, which I'm sure wasn't the effect they wanted. And you mis-spelled my dear friend Itt's name wrong in the cut tag.

Will have to rewatch with my serious head on.

a thousand apologies to our dear cousin, Itt's name is fixed now

I'm sure Itt will be most appreciative; once he gets over wanting to be in Torchwood himself.

I'm so glad that I wasn't the only one who found the episode funny in the most inappropriate places. And Ianto with the hockey stick... *snorfle*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-21 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
especially the look Jack gave Ianto when he returned with the stick :)

I tried not to laugh, but I failed miserably.

Glove-gasm is my new favorite non-word.

The whole beer thing kind of amused me...

it seemed like WAY more than the ammount of beer he could have actually drank, 30 seconds of a geyser like that? How many beers did he have 9? 10? 30?

glove-gasm... what else are you going to call it?

Maybe he chugged from a keg?

That's totally what it was.

I kind of liked the episode, well, parts of it. I thought JB was overacting like mad during the glove scene, but I liked how he talked to Owen during that scene, and the jail scene. I wondered about Martha as well, maybe she came back because it didn't kill her completely, it started to, but Jack stopped it.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-22 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, now that's an explanation I can buy- Jack short-circuited it somehow so it didn't "feed" off Martha properly. Thanks!
