Ok, I am not going to lock this post. I will put it behind a cut though since I totally understand not wanting to read about any of this. Whatever you've heard or read about what's going on in Minnesota recently... it's worse. ICE has murdered two people now, outright just shot them to death. They handcuffed and detained about 100 clergy members doing a peaceful protest at the airport. They're grabbing children and using them as bait and lying about it. There's video. There's eyewitness accounts. But they still lie about everything making ridiculous claims about the people they're killing, arresting, and targeting. It's been proved they've altered and manipulated photos (sometimes, probably accidentally, releasing both the manipulated and unedited versions like in Levy Armstrong's case) but they don't seem to care and still try to push false narratives and lies to the point of tackling and arresting photographers trying to document events (tumblr post with lots of collection information about Getty photographer John Abernathy's arrest.)
I saw my first ICE raid on Thursday. At 4:30 there were suddenly tons of whistles blowing and cars honking down the street from my house at the corner where there is an elementary school (kindergarden-5th grade aka ages 5-10/11) and a daycare (for infants-pre-school aged kids and is bilingual). It was -20f out so it took me a bit to get on wintergear to get there but so many people flooded out of their homes and pulled over to try to help/observe. It was so sad to see parents there panicking and trying to collect their kids and get out and away to safety. So many terrified children. I couldn't stay long but it didn't look like ICE actually grabbed anyone.
All of that (along with Bondi's letter of demands to Governor Walz) makes it obvious they want to make people afraid and cowed as they try to do whatever they can to keep their party in power. I've seen numerous comparisons between Trump and Franco or his regime and the Gestapo and, worryingly, they don't feel too far off. And there are just so many people who seem oddly willing to enable it all (like those who claim it's Harris and Walz's fault they lost due to X, Y or Z or berate/blame Walz or Minneapolis mayor Frey for not doing enough/doing too much/whatever which has led to the US/MN being where it is now and lots and lots of people ripping down celebs and politicians who speak out against ICE for not speaking out against Israel, etc etc etc) I can never decide if it's shortsightedness, stupidity, trolls or antisemitism at play- probably all of the above.
Generally speaking from what I've seen, MPR News (Minnesota Public Radio's news outlet), Reuters, the BBC and the Guardian have had decent reporting as far as I can tell and without too many (often disturbing/graphic) videos that play automatically but, to be honest, I've been checking less and less for my own mental health.
If you live somewhere ICE may be targeting this tumblr post has some info and a bunch of links on building networks and response groups, what's legal and not, 3d whistle printing files, signs to print and more. This article, "Rapid Response Networks in the Twin Cities", goes into excellent details about what the Twin Cities did and how its worked. A best-practices document explaining the nitty gritty for neighborhood/area patrol is on proton docs here.
And, more generally speaking, Stand With Minnesota has a huge collection of things to do and ways to help.
Stay safe out there, both to those affected by the current weather craziness and the general *waves hand at the world today* craziness.
