Jim Butcher news

This is probably old news to most of my flist, but just in case anyone is as behind as I am

[profile] jimbutcher, author of the Dresden Files series and others, has an LJ page!  It's not updated too frequently, but there are some interesting posts on the art of writing.

's awesome, isn't it? *bounces*

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Me? I'm fangirling the guy pretty damn hard. Well. Mainly his books, but, y'know.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I just got the newest Dresden Files from the library. YAY for his books!

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Small Favors?

... I'm insanely jealous. 'm still waiting for it to come out as a paperback in Orbit so I can finally order it *whimpers*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep.

I'm too cheap to buy books if I can get them from the library.

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Used to use the library a lot, but now that I'm over 18 I'd have to pay and ... I kind of want to actually own the Dresden Files. And the Codex Alera. And the books from a few other authors I love. All other books, library or asking friends works fine, but those? I gotta have them!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, I understand- there are certain books you just HAVE to own. My shelves are full of them.

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. For me, Jim Butcher's books are among those To-Have books. *nods*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
understandable. eventually I'll probably pick them up in paperback, hardcover is just too dang expensive

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
's why I always wait for the paperback. even if it's killing me!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't gotten too far into Small Worlds, but I'm really happy- Micheal and his family are in it. I think Butcher's amazing for how he's written the Knights. it would have been to easy to have them (micheal and Sayna etc) come off badly

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, 's really pretty damn awesome. In fact, pretty much all his characters are just so likeable in one way or another. Except for the villains. And in the Codex Alera, even the villains are kind of likeable. In a weird sort of way.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
the characters are also full-bodied. not caricatures if that makes sense

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it does. I love that they're all complex - like actual persons. Yay!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
exactly!

(wow, I made sense!)

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
you did! you do that a lot! :D

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
is that a good thing or a bad thing? :D

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
hmmmm... in this case? good :D

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* but just in this case!

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
if people went around making sense all the time, where would that get us? just imagine!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
we'd never have quoteable quotes for icons!

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Dresden Files... no idea which book, though.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It is very Harry. He's so eloquent! *snerk*

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Ab-so-lu-tely! *beams brightly*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I could never get that level of snark to work for a character

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Neither could I. I'm just not that snarky. But it's absolutely awesome!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
me neither. I could probably manage the occasional one-liner, but never sustain it through a whole set of books

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
nope. 's one of the things I love so much about the dresden files, too!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
and it has so much canon and it all works, even the littlest details

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
He's just a fantastic character *loves*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
they all are- Murphy, Mac, even Mouse and Mister- he has the coolest pets!

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I love his pets! They're awesome. I just. I really, really love the books and the characters and. They're just all wonderful ♥

*squees all over the place*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
there's a short scene in the newest book where Harry's leaving and tells Mouse to keep an eye on Mister and not to let him play with the catnip too much. Mouse whines at him and Harry says- come on, you're 7x bigger than him... and Mouse just looks back at him completely unconvinced. it's great

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That's just so awesome. I love Mouse and Mister is such a cat. He rules the world and everyone else will just have to learn how to deal with it. At least he's gracious enough to let Harry and Mouse stay in his apartment!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
as long as they recognize it is HIS he's okay with that

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. And they better serve him food and let him in our out when he wants it. Because he demands so!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I love how he's nearly taken down Harry upon occassion when Harry was late getting home and Mister wanted in and wanted in NOW

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
he's clearly strong and Harry better do as he says. or Mister is going to take. him. out.

... or, well. maim him a bit. wouldn't want to lose his servant, after all.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
a little maiming here and then isn't such a bad thing, according to cats

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
reminds you of your place *nods wisely*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
bloody evil furrbutts

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got it on order too, along with White Night and Proven Guilty. Considering I didn't start reading them til Febrary or March that isn't bad going. Problem is, once I've read them all there aren't any more til next year!

And I didn't know he had an LJ either.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-05 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
isn't that the worst? At first there is ALL this material for you to read and then *boom* you've read it all!
