The Anniversary

When Gwen entered the Hub everything had been shut down for the night. There was a quiet stillness to it she rarely had a chance to experience. She found Jack sitting alone in his office, staring into the nothingness.
She carefully approached him. “Jack?”
“Gwen?” He blinked quickly, his eyes unusually bright. “Hey. What are you doing back here?”
“It’s January 21st,” she replied, leaning against his desk. “Your anniversary. I didn’t think you should spend it alone.”
“Anniversary?” His voice was muffled as he wiped his hand over his face.
“Of when you took your name.”
“What? How did you...”
She placed a piece of paper on his desk. “Or, rather, it's the anniversary of when you decided to keep it, yeah?”
Jack slowly picked up the paper. It was a copy of an article that listed Captain Jack Harkness, American RAF volunteer, as missing in action and presumed dead on January 21, 1941 after failing to report for duty.
“I wasn’t going to,” he started to explain, his voice fraught with emotions, “keep it. It wasn’t part of the plan, but then...” The paper started to shake in his hand.
“I’m glad you did, it suits you.” She walked over to his crystal decanter. “How about a toast?” When he nodded she poured them each drink. “Happy anniversary, Captain Jack Harkness.”
They clinked their glasses, then sipped their drinks slowly. After a short while he spoke, smiling slightly, the shadows banished from his eyes. “Thank you, Gwen. For the company and the...I, well, thanks.”
