Mysteries to Ponder

Title: Mysteries to Ponder
Pairing/Warning/Rating: Doctor Who fandom, spoilers for "Mawdryn Undead," rated G
Word Count: 100
Summary: Turlough was a bit of a mystery to the Doctor.
Author's Note: Written for the [community profile] dw100 challenge: miscreant

Of course, the Doctor knew immediately that something was hiding behind Turlough’s innocent exterior.  It had taken less than a second’s glance to see this wasn’t just some lost school boy who’d wandered into a transmat beam by accident.

No, there had been nothing accidental there.  Nothing innocent either.  Perhaps not an outright miscreant, but close.  There was something, something hidden about him that the Doctor needed to discover.  And what better way to find out what it was than invite the boy along when they left Earth?  There was a mystery there, one the Doctor couldn’t wait to unravel.

I thought you might

I wonder how much had been preplanned by the writers. He talks about being stuck on Earth in Mawdryn Undead, but it's not till 9 adventures later that it's revealed he's not human.

I'm betting not much, really. Although he grumbles about humans at some point--something about why they confuse a pointless gesture with a noble one. ...Actually, I'm not sure if he's complaining about humans or people from Earth. But anyway.

and you wind up with people like me, who had seen Turlough's adventures but somehow missed his last one (planets of fire, right?) and never did learn that he was actually NOT human.

hmm, come to think of it, I still haven't seen it. Damn all that canon!

Planet of Fire, yep. Which you haven't seen because Peri's in it. *g*

Though if you put the Peri blinkers on, its worth watching.

Of course the Doctor knew Turlough was hiding something when he met him, he just didn't let on that he knew. Telepathic ship, remember - she'd know straight away.

I loved Trurlough... I even have the post Who Turlough book (The Earthlink Dilemma) sitting on my shelves.

oh, that's right! I knew there was a reason. I also want to see the rest of Turlough's in semi-order and my youtube-fu has been failing me
