The Electric Lime Invitation

Title: The Electric Lime Invitation
Pairing/Warning/Rating: Vague Jack/Ianto, No warnings or spoilers, rated G
Word Count: 497
Beta: [personal profile] unfeathered
Summary:
Jack gets an invitation he can't refuse.
Author's Note: Written for the wonderiffic [personal profile] rustydog in honor of her birthday, I hope she doesn't mind me posting it a bit early.

Ianto knocked quietly on the door to Jack's office.  “Mail for you, Sir.”

“Hmm?”  Jack looked up distractedly from a pile of paperwork.  “What is it?”

“An invitation, I believe.”

“Not another political soiree, is it?  If I have to wine and dine another political dignitary I might wind up doing something even I'd end up regretting.”

Ianto held out the card.  “I highly doubt that would be the case in this instance.”

Jack stared at the invitation in question, blinking as his gaze took in... “Is that green crayon?”

“Technically, I think the correct name for it would be electric lime.”  Ianto smiled, studiously ignoring Jack's raised eyebrow at his response.  “Shall I?”

“Oh, by all means,” Jack gestured at the card with his hand.  “Go right ahead.”

Ianto reached over and took the letter opener off Jack's desk and slit the card open.  Clearing his throat, he began to read, “Miss Josephine requests the honor of your presence at a tea party this Sunday at three o'clock.”  He paused, tilting his head slightly.  “Miss Josephine?”

Jack leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms.  “Oh, you remember, that little girl we saved from the Thrudian beast.”

Ianto pursed his lips.  “Ah, right.  There is also a post script here.”  He brought the invitation up closer to his face as he tried to decipher the crayon scribbling on the back of the card. “I hope Mister Fluffybunnykins made you feel better.  Can you bring him for a visit when you come for tea?”

The uncomfortable silence that followed was finally broken when Ianto cleared his throat.  “Mister Fluffybunnykins, Sir?”

Jack got up and walked over to a set of drawers and bent down to fish something out of bottom one.  "Well, yes."  He kept his back to Ianto, obviously embarrassed, his tone sheepish.  “Josie was scared, so I might have hinted that she had every right to be.  I explained that it was a very scary creature and maybe, just maybe, I was a little scared of it as well.  And then she, so she... well, she suggested I take Mister Fluffybunnykins home with me.  She said that he'd keep me safe and that he was good at keeping her nightmares away so maybe he'd do the same for me.”

Ianto stepped up behind Jack and placed a hand on his arm.  “That was very kind of you.  I'm sure it did her good to know that everyone, even big strong Captains, get scared sometimes.”

“I should ring her to tell her I'll come.”  Jack laid his hand over Ianto’s.

“I'll do it, Sir.  Shall I confirm for both you and Mister Fluffybunnykins?”

Jack laughed.  “Yes, for both of us.”  Jack fingered the floppy ears briefly.  “Thanks, Ianto.”

With a last pat to Jack's shoulder, Ianto turned and left, knowing that the image of the great Captain Jack Harkness looking longingly at that purple stuffed bunny rabbit would be with him for quite some time.

Being dead sucked.

Owen stuffed Ted E. Bear (he'd been a highly unoriginal child - Katie had always said so) into the bulging black bin bag along with the rest of the bedlinen from his closet. He had no need of sleep. No need of comfort. No *needs* at all...

*snuggles you*
Now if I can just get my brain to produce more words I might even get fic writing again soon...

Dangles donuts for your muse. What about the Doctor? Doesn't he get a bear?

Five would have a bear...

Seven definitely had a bear... for weeks after Ace was gone he'd say goodnight to it in passing - it wasn't that he was lonely you undertand. It just worried him when he caught himself talking to thin air.

oh no, not lonely at all. and maybe, just maybe, he'd prop it up on the TARDIS console when tinkering. And explain what he was doing. Because, the bear might want to know

He was just keeping an eye on the thing, mind you. It's not that he needed the company.

It might have been Susan's - he's not sure - his memory will insist on playing tricks on him. She *did* have a bear but he can't remember it being dressed in red and white stripey trousers or having that absurd cap perched between its ears.

(And he certainly has no idea how it came to get out of the third hamper from the floor in the back of the TARDIS wardrobe.)

All in all, it's rather quite silly looking, there's no way anyone he's known could have ever truly found it endearing. Especially the way the left ear is ever so slightly bent like that

and it refuses to straighten no matter how many times he tries to stroke it gently back in to place. Yes, it's definitely showing its age - the stitching on its nose is frayed and its smile (what's left of it) is decidedly wonky.

not that he tries to keep the ear straight, mind you. Presumedly it stood up straight originally and if he were to try to stroke it back in place- no stroke is the wrong word- push, yes, push it back he'd be only attempting to bring the bear back to its original luster.

Which was the exact reason he spent three hours on Jorvisndian Prime looking for a solvent that would gently remove the grease stain from its trousers.

Back in the console room with the bottle in his hand he didn't hesitate at all. And if he was being gentle when he laid it down on a fluffy towel spread over the captain's chair that was only because of its very great age and of course the towel was there to stop the once pale gold fur from getting any more dirty.

Not that it would bother him fur got dirty, but any dirt that got on it might wind up transferring to the console the next time he set the bear there, and the circuitry was delicate and it wouldn't do to get dust particles and muck in it. Really, he was just looking out for the TARDIS, wasn't he? And if the bear's original owner, who ever that was, was to someday return, he wouldn't want them dismayed at the condition of the poor thing.

I *loved* the camerawork in that episode and capped it obsessively, so it was inevitable I would icon. Back when I could. ::wistful for bygone days::

Now I remember why I didn't upload it as one of my icons immediately at the end of the season.

The end of this season? ::sniff::

I actually held off using mine for awhile after I watched s1 because a couple of my friends hadn't finished yet and I didn't want to make them wonder.

Yes, the end of this season - I ran mostly Tosh and Owen for a long time afterwards.
