Oy. My first impression was, "SERIOUSLY, even in a MUSICAL COMEDY, even though it's you Joss Whedon?" Sigh.

But on the other hand, if this is more of an origin story than a comedy (as in - they do more with the Dr. Horrible character later), that *is* a classic way to create a supervillain. So I don't know. And then Bad Horse was A HORSE. And I was kind of happy again. :)

But I know what you mean. I feel like a chump because I should have *known*, with it being Joss, but nope, I was all giddy and hopeful.

Ha, and now I'm trying to figure out which of my characters-killed-off-by-Joss-Whedon icons to use. There are so many! (I'll refrain so as not to inadvertently spoil anybody for a Jossverse show.)

Well, I knew what happened was going to happen because it always happens in a super~~hero~~villain story. I think Joss has always found ways to make silly things more serious, so the tone change was normal too. The only thing I found disappointing was the very last few seconds, which were anti-climatic. It didn't seem to fit with the silliness at all. It felt like they ran out of time/budget and threw something together last minute.

However, I enjoyed it all up to that point and I liked the music a lot, though Felicia Day's songs all sounded exactly the same to me. I didn't know Nathan could sing, so that was nifty too.

But the ending. Meh.

Okay, that's a good point about the origins story, but, but... the funny thing is I *was* going to buy it on itunes to support the cause and whatnot, but now I really don't want to.

I could see it coming. Captain Hammer HAD to have a fall, but Doctor Horrible couldn't completely win what with being evil and all - he had to have that sort of hollow victory where Hammer lost his status and the girl, but Horrible couldn't be happy AND a super-villain.

I enjoyed it. I LOVE a dark comedy, and I have a soft spot for evil.

I suppose I should have seen it coming, especially since it's Joss, but damnit, I like happy endings!

I think the only option for him to be happy with her would be to give up evil, but since it kind of feels like they want to come back to this character later (it seems like a story to set him up, if you see what I mean) they couldn't have written it that way.

I like happy endings a lot less than I like interesting endings. But I still kind of wanted her to join him in the evil!

rustydog mentioned it, but yes, then they couldn't have the traditional happy ending. But I love your idea of her joining him on the evil side!

I normally like dark endings, but this one for some reason left me feeling kind of empty. I think, maybe for once, I wanted a happy ending so badly I ended up convincing myself that no other possibility could be true.

But I did appreciate the humor bits, oh so much. The leading joke of awesome being that Bad Horse is an actual horse as others have mentioned.

Yes, yes and YES! Up to the point where she's peering through the chairs I was positive they're be a happy ending for those two... There were a lot of funny bits, but as a result of the ending I just don't want to watch it again.

In my head I was imaging some sort of huge love duet finale number between Horrible and Penny. But now I can practically hear Whedon cackling at me for ever even thinking it.

And while the ending was a downer, I have to admit a bunch of the songs got stuck in my head, which led to lots of repeat watching. I can still hear Nathan Fillon happily singing, "This so nice. I just might sleep with the same girl twice."

Yes, a duet would have been perfect. He'd have either given up his evil ways or she'd have joined him in a robin hood-like manner...

My love for Nathan Fillon doubled after this. His first entrance had be on the ground with laughter. It was one of the more pleasant surprises.

I also kind of adored Neil Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible. "You know me? Cool! I mean...yeah, you do....do you?"

Neil Patrick Harris was truly incredible. Some of the looks he gives when he's doing his blog- that vague confusion and steely determination- were just great!

Thanks to the general humor and acting, it's a movie that's ridiculously icon-worthy.

I sort of want Whedon to continue with a series of this, but I'm also incredibly wary that he'll take whatever is left sunny and break it into a billion traumatized pieces.

yeah- Whedon's very good at taking your hope and expectation and desires and building them up before attaching them all to a big ol' bomb and nuking them out of existence.

No, not really. I think he maybe just enjoyed snorting the Angst Coke so much that he's now addicted to it beyond a healthy level.

Seriously- it's like he figures out what would make the fans most happy and then, just when it looks like he's going to deliver it, jerks the rug out from under us all with a "Ha!"

I think Toy Story might be the only time he didn't do that, but he certainly made it almost seem like he did. But Buffy, Angel, Serenity, and now Dr. Horrible? Angst city

I didn't know he wrote Toy Story! Well...that certainly explains the angst-ish quality I started to feel when everyone talked about how they were the forgotten toys. But yeah, at least that had a happy ending. Had he written that now, Woody and the gang probably would have gotten sold off in some lawn sale and separated for the rest of their toy lives.

I just looked it up again to be sure and yes, he did the screenplay for it. One would hope, that as a kids movie, he'd have been able to stick to the happy ending, but we all know he wouldn't have if tptb let him get away with it.

His stuff's getting a little silly now. There is nothing wrong with a 'they all lived happily ever after' ending. Really

I feel like for awhile Whedon was the guy whose work you wanted to watch b/c he did angst very well. But then somewhere in the middle of Buffy and toward the end of Angel, it got to be like Angst Porn. I wouldn't say it started to get boring, but it was more like I started to wonder if Whedon secretly had begun to hate all his characters and wanted to make them suffer.

And you're right. A simple "Happily Ever After" wouldn't go unappreciated at this point.
