The Captain and the Constable

Title: The Captain and the Constable
Pairing/Rating/Warning: Jack/Fraser, rated G
Word Count: 803
Summary: Two men walk into a bar...
Beta: The wonderful, awesome, absolutely incredible [personal profile] unfeathered
Author's Note:  Due South/Torchwood crossover.  Written for [personal profile] travels_in_time who wanted a rated G version of what happened after the drabble

The door pushed open, letting in some sunshine along with the two men.

“What'll it be, boys?”  I asked, kind of glad for the company on this typically slow Wednesday afternoon.

Since we're only a few blocks from the Canadian Embassy, I'd seen the first man's uniform often enough to recognize Mountie when I see one, although he was the first one I’d seen come in here.   “Just water for me please, Ma'am.”  He turned to his friend. “For you, Captain?”

“Water'd be fine.”

I opened my mouth to say something about this being a bar not a drinking fountain when the Captain flashed a brilliant smile and lay a twenty down on the counter before walking to a table in the back.  So I just shrugged and poured the water.  Money's money, right?

“Hey, wait!”  I called out, noticing a dog following them to the table.  “No dogs allowed.”

“Oh, he's not a dog.”  The Mountie said, removing his hat and placing it against his chest.  “Constable Benton Fraser, at your service, Ma'am.  This is Diefenbaker, my wolf.”

“Err, right.”  There was no one else here but Fat Freddie and he was asleep at his usual barstool, dead to the world.  He certainly wasn't going to care.  The boss wasn't going to be in for hours... “Technically, there's no policy on whether or not wolves can be in the bar.”  I said, carefully.  “I guess he can stay.”

“A fine distinction,” he smiled and tipped his head slightly. “Thank you kindly, Ma'am.”

After they settled in I brought them their water and got a grin from the Captain that made me wish I was a few decades younger.  The Constable gave his friend a dark look before turning and offering me another “Thank you, kindly, Ma’am.”  It seemed like they had something heavy to discuss so I left them alone to give them a chance to talk.

“You fellows holler if you need anything else, okay?”  I called over my shoulder as I went behind the bar.  Now, I should have just let them be, most people expect their privacy when they duck into a dark bar, but I couldn’t help but keep my eyes on them and try to figure out their story.  And who could blame me?   Two handsome men, with an air of mystery about them and a wolf?  Far better than the typical afternoon of doing nothing except poking Fat Freddie awake every hour or so to make sure he wasn’t dead.

The Captain stood up, a little stiffly perhaps, and took off his coat, this big blue greatcoat, and folded it over an empty chair.  When he turned I could see a huge slash in his shirt.  The Constable must have noticed it too because he pointed at it and said something I couldn’t quite hear, but he sounded sad and maybe a bit angry too.

“Benton.”  I heard the Captain reply as he sat back down, “it all worked out in the end, I told you I knew what I was doing.”  He bent over and gave the wolf a scratch behind the ears.  “Right, Dief?  I always know exactly what I’m doing.”  Diefenbaker wagged his tail happily.

The Constable shook his head slightly, not sure if he was depressed or just disappointed.  “Jack, the risks you take...” he started to say, before trailing off.  That’s when the Captain reached over and lay his hand over the man’s hand.  It almost looked like he stroked the Constable’s knuckles ever so slightly, but I might have imagined it.

“It’s what I do, Benton.  It’s who I am.”  He drained his glass and smiled slightly.  “You know that.”

“Yes, I do.  I just forgot for a moment.”  The Constable sighed and shook his head, but he smiled back before finishing his own water.  “I guess Deifenbaker and I should be heading back to the Consulate.  Will you be in town long?”  He stood up, handing his friend the greatcoat.

“At least till the morning,” was the answer as the Captain got up and slipped into his coat.

That got a wide smile from the Constable as they started to leave.  “Thank you kindly, Ma’am,” he said to me.

“Keep the change,” the Captain added, waving away my attempt to return his money.  Hmm... twenty bucks for two waters and some interesting eavesdropping, not bad, not bad at all.

I guess I’d imagined that there was tension between the two of them when they’d sat down, or maybe they’d worked it out.  Either way, they were both smiling freely when they left and I couldn’t help but notice the supportive, slightly possessive way the Captain put his hand on the small of the Constable's back as they headed out the door into the sunlight, the wolf at their side.

Yay! Due South and Torchwood in one fic!!! 2 of my favourite shows (: I'm sure they could have lots of fun together

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-29 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Lots and lots of "fun" right? Glad you liked it!

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2007-10-29 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that I know anyone in this except for Jack, but it was very pretty nonetheless. I like outsider's POV and it worked well for this, too, I think :D

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-29 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I never tried that sort of POV before, glad it worked!

"Due South" aired in the mid 1990s. The pilot is up at youtube: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=3mDOyeR7mBU

This is so sweet, and really does make me realise how very similar these two guys are... and how very, very pretty they'd be together! *g*

*cough* beta credit? *cough*

Very nice. I like how Fraser was telling Jack off for taking risks, considering some of the stunts he pulls (and he's not even indestructible!)- talk about the pot calling the kettle black! :-)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-29 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
In my mind they each hate for other people to take risks, they don't see it as a big deal when they do it. Glad you liked!

Ah, the Mountie-with-the-cute-bum (as he was always refered to in our household)... and Jack, who's bum is also cute, can't lose!!!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-29 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Mountie-with-the-cute-bum!!! I love it!!! :)

awww..... More?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-29 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt I'll have any idea where to take it next, but glad you liked it.

Yay for more Jack and Fraser! I love outsider POV, and like [livejournal.com profile] cat63 said, I love that Fraser's getting onto Jack for risking his life. That's very him. He can risk his, but other people shouldn't. And Jack's the same that way.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-29 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea where that POV came from, but it just seemed to work, isn't it weird when writing's like that? With luck this pairing is finally out of my head now...

[identity profile] eumenidis.livejournal.com 2007-10-29 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
What, Dief doesn't get a water? Unfair...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-29 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, I debated back and forth having the narrator bring a bowl of water for Dief, but decided the place was a dive and probably wouldn't have them. Dief didn't really mind though, Jack spent most of the time scratching him behind the ears...

Oh my hell yes! More Jack/Fraser? ::bouncebouncebounce!:: YAYS! So much pretty in one place...

Now if we could just figure out a way to add a little Ray Kowalski into the mix, I might just die of a too-pretty-to-be-real overdose!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-30 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Glad you liked. All that pretty in one place is definately a good thing!

I like this. I like the setting, I can feel the place. What made you think to write it from an outsider's POV? It works, pulling back and leaving a lot of the conversation unheard.

the supportive, slightly possessive way the Captain put his hand on the small of the Constable's back as they headed out the door

::shiver:: I *love* it when Jack does that. It's such a small gesture but so meaningful (and old school).

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-30 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly? The only reason it is from the outsider POV is because it was a way to gloss over things I wasn't sure how to say, or certain bits worked better with it, like the part with the hand on the back. I always melt a bit when Jack does that, it's so sweet.

[identity profile] shadowbyrd.livejournal.com 2007-10-30 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I love you.

Fraser and Jack. Together. And better yet it's actually good!

Thank you!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-30 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
*big grin* glad you liked!

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2007-10-30 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
You continue to be awesomely awesome! This is great. I'd comment more but I'm about to run out the door again, but just have to say that this:

the supportive, slightly possessive way the Captain put his hand on the small of the Constable's back

is WAY too hot for something done in public and fully clothed. Why? I don't know. But I really like it.

Also your ideas of how they interreact is giving me ideas for that Fic I Didn't Want to Write...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-30 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
*bounces* I'm so happy you liked it!!! Personally, I loved that line, it's so JACK.

err... sorry about giving you ideas.

[identity profile] son-heir.livejournal.com 2007-10-31 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
yay Due South!
I love that show but there's not exactly a good choise of people to slash Fraser with.
Him and Jack would be good together, really liked this.

I'm so glad you liked it!! :)

Ahhh RL, can be such an annoyance. Glad you liked it! :)

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Very sweet. If you gotta go "G" this is certainly the way to do it, plenty of hints and allegations without ever showing or even saying anything.

And let me say for obvious reasons, what a wonderful, non-clingy little affair I could see these two having.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2010-04-29 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I love innuendo as a way of showing romance, it works especially well for Benton and Jack in my mind.
