Curled in on herself she stayed out of sight in her special spot, hiding from the chaos out in the main room.  First there had been a lot of yelling, then several loud bangs and then everything was quiet.

Time passed.  Men in the uniforms came, but they didn’t see her.  Strangers came in and out, looking everywhere, but she stayed hidden.  She thought she was safe and no one would see her until she heard the soft, “Doctor Mallard?  I think we have a witness here.”

The one who found her moved very slowly as he approached.  He bent down, waiting to make sure she wasn’t startled when he lifted the curtain she was hiding behind so he could see her better.   “Hey there, little one.” He was soft spoken and gentle.  “You’ve been there a while, haven’t you?  I bet you’re hungry, probably thirsty too.”  As he spoke he brought his hands up, so she could see they were empty, and he wasn’t a threat.  “It’s okay.  You’re all right,” he murmured, over and over, until she relaxed.

“Let’s get you out of there,” he said, scooping her up.  Purring, she snuggled into in his arms. “Good kitty.”
