Gibbs exited the elevator, rounded the corner and stopped short when he spotted Tony sprawled on the floor of the bullpen, sleeping.
“DiNozzo!” It wasn’t a shout, but only just. “What are you doing here?”
“Boss! I... uh...”
“Boiler again?” Tony nodded. “I told you my door’s always unlocked.”
“Didn’t want to take advantage, Boss.”
“Then don’t. Dinner’ll be at eight.”
“I’ll bring the wine.” Tony joked, laughing at responding head slap.
Neither of them were aware that Ben the mail guy had come up the hall a few minutes before and had overheard their conversation before slipping away.
6:03 am
“Hello, Agent Dobbs,” Ben said, handing over the mail. “You’re here early.”
“The joys of paperwork. Haven’t seen you in awhile. What’s the good word?”
“You shouldn’t go in the supply room without knocking.”
Dobbs laughed. “Lee and Palmer? Again? Good to know. Anything else?”
“Agent DiNozzo’s apartment’s uninhabitable again.”
Dobbs shook his head. “That man has to find a new place. He bunking with Gibbs?”
“Yes, but....”
“But?”
“They made dinner plans for tonight. Agent DiNozzo said he’s bringing wine.”
“Really? We better keep this between us.”
Ben nodded, but didn’t see Abby before she ran off.
7:14am
“McGee! You’re here, you’re finally here! I have the most amazing news!” Abby launched herself into Tim’s arms.
“You’re here awfully early, Abby. And very... energetic.”
“I never left, I had to keep an eye on my babies while they ran tests. But it’s a good thing I was here, you won’t believe what I overheard! A date! They’re going out on a date!”
“A date? Who?”
“Tony and the Bossman! Dinner! Tonight!”
“You’re kidding.”
“Nope! Dinner, wine, the works! Can you believe it? Tony and Gibbs’ll make such a cute couple!” Looking rather shell shocked, Tim didn’t respond.
7:17 am
The Director’s assistant, Cynthia, had overheard Tim and Abby talking and was rather surprised by the news. “A man like that,” she muttered to herself in the break room. “In a relationship. I would never guessed in a million years.” She stirred her coffee so vigorously some spilled over the side. “Agent Gibbs and Agent DiNozzo. Together. Director Shepard is going to go ballistic when she finds out. If she finds out. God, I hope they can be discrete.” With a sigh, and a shake of her head, she left, not seeing Agent Lee standing in the shadow.
7:29 am
“Jethro, a word please.” Gibbs merely cocked an eyebrow as Ducky led him into the elevator and hit the stop button. “Really, Jethro, what were you thinking?”
“About?”
“About Anthony! Honestly, Jethro.” Ducky shook his head.
“What about him? He can’t camp out here, can he?”
“Camping? Mr. Palmer said you and Anthony are planning a commitment ceremony. I wasn’t aware you were even dating!”
“Palmer said what?”
“Agent Lee told him and he told me.” Ducky’s eyes narrowed. “What do you have to say for yourself, Jethro?”
Gibbs restarted the elevator. “You shouldn’t listen to gossip, Duck.”
