If you're curious if a pan that's been in the oven for an hour is hot the answer is yes.

I am an idiot.

(big red splotchy burn, no blisters)

Oh good grief, I know this one from experience. If it's not glowing, steaming or otherwise giving some *visual* indication of its temperature, I am incapable of remembering it's hot.

*sends ice and sympathy*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
*ooh ice, that's better* I hate to say it, but I'm glad I'm not the only one

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh baby *hugs*

You kept it in cold water for at *least* ten minutes? Didn't you!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
ran cold water over it for about 5 min and then held an ice pack (wrapped in a towel) on it for another 10 or so

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Owwwww. Even if it's not blistering, I know it hurts. Ice is your friend!

I can't seem to clear my arms of the inside of the oven door. It's *inside* the oven, I should know it's hot, too.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I've done that too, but not as often and usually by accident.

This was just SO dumb- it's cast iron, of course it's going to be hot!

I'm going to ice it again soon. 10 min on 20 off if I remember my first aide correctly

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
OW. Really sorry to hear that.

If it helps any, I've done it too, more than once...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
*hugsies* thanks, in a way it helps to know others have done it to

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Ouch >.<
Don't worry, I'm silly today too. I thought a beaker that had been on a bunsen burner for ten minutes wouldn't be hot and lifted it off with bare hands.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
YIPES!!!! Are you okay?

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, no lasting damage and nothing spilled! It was stupid, though.

How's your hand? Did you get some ice - or frozen peas. Frozen peas are good.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
did cold water immediately, then an ice pack, then frozen potatoes (hash browns- so they were basically pea-sized)

Now there's a light splotchy bit on the side of the palm that aches a bit (where the burn was the worst) and most of the rest of the palm feels tight, but overall- not bad and could have been a ton worse.

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad to hear it. You must have had good reflexes!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
yep, but not smarts because after the 'damn that's hot!' when I immediately dropped it, I then tried to pick it up again *d'oh*

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That's my girl :D

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
all there is a light splotchy bit now. I might ice it again once or twice, it's still a bit tender there

Feel really dumb though

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that this burns, but I can't seem to clear doorways. My shoulders and hips are constantly bruised. My spatial sense is FAIL.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG- I was going to post yesterday that it was my opinion that doorways shift as you try to go through them, just to make you smack into them!

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
This explains a LOT. Spatially Unstable Doorways!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
YES!

And then there are dimensionally unstable keys! You *know* you left them on the table, but then they aren't they and after 20 minutes you find them on the counter- they moved there all on their own!

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Not an opinion, it is a well known fact that doorways are actually an alien lifeform whose sole source of entertainment comes from making unsuspecting earthlings walk into them by shifting their spacial characteristics by tiny amounts (and then shifting back again when one may think to check to make sure one isn't going do-lally). They were initially investigated by the intergalactic agency for the protection of primitive species (homo sapiens being a primitive species, you know) but the case couldn't be taken to court as the intergalactic judiciary found the situation unanimously funny, especially considering no lasting harm was done to the primitives.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
*giggles madly*

you know, that might explain a few things

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Lavender is fantastic for burns and scalds, even if you use it neat (it's better in aloe vera gel if you can get it). If you do use it neat only use a a couple of drops on unbroken skin, it will ease any pain and stop blistering. The use of neat lavender oil on burns is what prompted Tisserand to investigate the properties of essential oils, thus giving birth to aromatherapy as we know it.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
lavender essential oil? Straight on the burn?

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
ONLY if your skin isn't broken. It will sting like hell for about 20 seconds but after that it really takes the 'burn' out of a burn. It's just about the only oil you can use neat, but you've got to be very careful you don't use too much.
